Im in the process of chosing a cam for my 88 460 5 spd. truck. Ive searched and searched and came to the conclusion the speed density is very picky of the cam you choose. A couple of quick questions first. Whats the stock valve spring limits? Ive heard there good up to about .530ish. Ive also heard you wanna stay within a 112-114 lobe sep. angle? Im really digging the Howard cam 240931-11. Also since the motor was already rebuilt fairly recently with OEM parts i dont really wanna dig into the bottom end just yet. Now to the heads. Are there any aftermarket EFI heads? Ive heard the EFI heads are just plan crap as far as flow. I really dont wanna spend a boat load of money upping the valve size just yet. Without upping the stock valve sizes is porting the stock heads really worth it? I mean 5 horses to me, just dont justify $800 in port work. Truck has headers and full exhaust. Just begging for a cam and better a better set of heads. Sorry for all the noob questions, just new to the 385 series. What yall think?
I would get a custom cam from reincarnation high performance they will know what works with the factory efi. Re in"Car"nation High Performance - Home
No there are not any aftermarket EFI heads.
You probably wont be gaining much unless you find some one that can do a custom tune for you, witch is the problem there isn't much info out there for tuning the 460 ECU. I have heard of some guys doing a mass air conversion and using a ECU from a 5.0 mustang then the tuning options are almost endless.
