Has anyone tried Night Shade or something similar on chrome ?
I would like to try and darken the bumper on my 78' and have read somewhere that there is a primer adhesive that can be applied to help make it adhere and what type of prep.
I'd like to give it a try and know that it would be like painting glass but would like your thoughts and what you think.
Thanks for response whatever it may be.
I've never heard of night shade, but House of Kolor makes a product called Adhereto that claims it will adhere to (haha) chrome and can then be topcoated.
Night Shade is a transparent spray that is used to tint tails, heads and some have sprayed their emblems. Here in Mich. Au.. Val.. caries it.
I've sprayed my door handles on my 78' the same as the body (enamel paint) and only have a couple small chips, but the bumpers... I thought I'd ask around before attempting it and using a different product altogether.
Thanks for your feedback though.
I used Duplicolor's black chrome kit to darken my emblems. Basically it's a can of candy black and a can of clear. Worked great and fits my camouflaged theme.
I think you're referring to something similar to PPG's Adhesion Promoter which acts like a primer. Prep over chrome consists of a red scuff pad to lightly scratch the chrome give to some tooth, then the Adhesion Promoter, then the candy (or translucent color).
Yep. It'll go on clear. The PPG AP #150 is intended for copper, brass, and bronze but works on chrome wheels, bumpers, etc.
The tough part is shooting tranlucents (like candies) is even coverage and knowing when to stop... I tend to end up on the dark side. Also, beware of tiger-striping your work!!
I live in northern MI and spring is still trying to make its entrance and having a difficult time of it, as soon as the weather and temp. is kind I'll be anxious to get to it and will post a pic. Shouldn't be to long now that its May.
Duplicolor also sells the adhesion promoter. It's used with the anodizing paints. I'm sure PPg would be a better product, but if you're using Duplicolor products anyway.
WOW... you stuffed all that performance into a 6 banger, I'm surprised it all fit , my 1st 4-wheeler was a 66' Bronco 6 banger but a full cab, then ordered and bought a 72' with a 302, loved it and wish I still had it.
As far as the black chrome product goes, at this point I'm hoping to have gathered enough info to help decide on a particular product, It all started when I saw Nite Shade mentioned here and started my ??'s.
As soon as the weather permits I'm planning on starting w/ my 78' and then on to my 03' to change its appearance some. Can't wait to get started.
