Hey guys I just bought my first ever ford so be patient with me lol. It's a 89 f350 2x4 that has a zf5. When I got it the speedo wasn't working so I got up under it last night to find the speedo cable taped to the frame. It looks like it had a newer zf5 put in at some point. That leaves me with no hookup for it. So what are my options to get a working speedo? Thanks
I don't remember if the rear case has provision for a speedometer cable on an S5-47, but if it does, you may be able to add the speedometer drive gear without a lot of trouble.
The ones that didn't have the gear had a spacer that was the same length, so I would imagine it would be an easy swap. Remove the output yoke, rear oil seal, slide out the spacer, and replace with the gear, install new oil seal and output yoke & nut. Then remove the rubber plug and install the speedo cable.
The S5-42 transmission was available with and without a mechanical speedometer, but the S5-47 was only offered for electronic speedometers so I don't know if the cable drive provision carried over to the -47 rear case. If I'm not mistaken (and I might be) the speedo goes into the tail, which is a seperate piece thus you could replace it with the trans in the truck rather than swap the whole thing out.
I know the tails come off because to go from 4x4 or 4x2 to the other that's the part that gets swapped out.
I just don't remember where the speedo gear goes - mine doesn't have one because my truck gets the speed off the differential.
