Dome/Map light question

Any way to clean this up? It's all pitted and junked out, plus I'm missing the center lens.

I was thinking that since I'm painting all the interior panels, I would shoot over to LMC or NPD and just buy a new dome light to finish out the interior...but they want over $80.00 for the dang thing!

Can I just scrub off the rust and crud, and paint it silver or something? I'm concerned that paint won't stick to what chrome is left on it.

If painting it is not an option, does anyone have one that's in good shape they might want to sell me? I have a headliner...I think that makes a difference with which light fixture I can use.

Interesting. Do those come in blue?

I tried to pm you, but you don't have enough posts under your belt yet for the system to let me message you.

I'm also interested in your stock chrome one. Are the lenses in good shape...not milky?

haha, kinda funny this thread. i had broken my lens cover taking it off last weekend. it was very brittle and fell apart. Was able to score a new one out of an 88 bronco at the junkyard on saturday. had to look at a few of them but eventually found one. the good news is you can probably find them f-series and bronco's until at least 91.

anyway, as far as cleaning up the chrome... if you can take out the dome try scrubbing it with aluminum foil. (just roll a clump in a bar and then scrub it). you can also try dipping the foil in coca-cola to give it more stripping power.

i know that suggestion probably sounds crazy but it works.

those chrome lights were used in cars + trucks from at least the 70's to mid 90's

Great. Let me try smashclash's alum foil trick, and if I can't get it clean enough, I'll get with you on your chrome fixture.

I can get the lens from LMC for a reasonable price, but the fixture itself is about $70.00 too much for my taste!

I'll also check with my local jy, but I don't expect too much from those guys these days....but that's another story.

The plastic one in the pic above is the same as I have in my truck. They came in late 90's Ford Tauruses (there's alot of these cars in the junkyards). You just have to clip one little plastic tit off the backside, then they screw right on.
Got mine for $5 at the local JY. Works way better than the stocker.

wow, they fit right up without any real modding? i'm going to have to look for one of them.

btw, how do you remove them since there are no exposed screws? do you just grab ahold of the plastic and pull them down?

Aluminum foil...who knew.

Smashclash did! Thanks dude.

This pic doesn't do the light justice. It's amazing how much better it is now. Who thinks up this crap? Like, "hey man, I'm gonna go scrub my chrome with aluminum foil now." What were they, drunk?

Now I'll clean up the little lenses, and order me a new center lens. I'm back in business!!

glad it worked for you. you might want to coat it with some wax or chrome polish so it doesn't pit again.

and i don't take credit for the aluminum foil trick. i read it on this board somewhere. i ended up using it to clean up my turn signal lever that was starting to pit. foil worked like a champ.

Pop the center clear lens off with a screwdriver, and there's 3 mounting screws underneath that are the same bolt pattern as the standard ford truck dome light.

Best to get the lamp assymbly from a pickup.

1980-1996 will work.

You can use the lamp assymblies from a car or a bronco, but the map lights will be aimed slightly in the wrong position.

Map lights seem to be aimed just fine to me. Even if they weren't, I've got another set of map lights between my sun visors.
