i have a 86 f150 with the good ol' trusty inline 6 and i wanted to figure out how to identify if i have the ford 9" or the ford 8.8 is there a big difference in the two??
Yep. 9" has a front drop-out unit, so the bolts are on the front side of the housing. 8.8" used a rear cover, with bolts on the backside of the housing.
The 9" is well known for strength, but the 8.8" can be built to be just as strong.
I'm just not fond of the axle bearings used in the 8.8", the axleshaft itself is the inner race. Plus, the bolt that holds the center pin in the spider gears is very prone to breaking off. A real PITA when you need to pull an axleshaft.......
Not a lot of difference. The first number is the grade/viscosity at lower temps, and the second number is what it thickens to after reaching a certain temp.
The important part is the "GL-4/5" rating. I believe you need a GL-5 rated gear oil for either the 8.8 or 9 diff.
Same here with my truck! I just switch over to royal purple 10w30 man is it more smoother! I love it!! Nice the rx7 gotta love those rotorary motors!! I tried racing one of those for kicks man did he kick a** I got him off the line though!
