Cracked Head???

Posting this for my parents 2005 Eddie Excursion 4wd (160,000). The excursion has been leaking coolant and the shop says it is a cracked head. Any idea how much replacement head should cost? $4,000? I have heard the body must be lifted to do the repair but just wanted to know what other excursion owners thought.

Plus, if we are spending that much on a repair is it better to just replace the engine and maybe get the 7.3 or something?

Thanks for any help.

i have replaced 3 sets of heads on 6.0l in the last 3 months common problem on them. the body does not have to come off to do the repair. i just put a set a heads on a 250 this week and did not take the body off.

Yes the engine is the infamous 6.0. The mechanic told my parents the body had to be removed to replace the heads. Sounded odd to me but I have never worked on an excursion. How much should I expect to pay at a dealer or mechanic to have the heads replaced.

Other posts have mentioned replacing the studs, would you recommend that as well?

Thanks

we get between 20 and 25 hours for head gaskets. we don't pull the body off to do them. i don't know how mutch some 1 would charge if they pulled the body off. i would charge alot more to do it that way. and yes you can put studs in with the body on. i would put studs in it if it were mine. they last alot longer with with the studs.

I agree as well... The body does not need to be pulled to install studs or remove the heads. I've seen it dive in YouTube and a few of the techs on here can attest. It won't be a cheap repair, but just make sure to install a coolant filter to keep the cooling system (especially the oil and EGR cooler) clear of casting sand.

Do the studs and EGR delete why you are at it!
