Hi, I'm asking this question for my brother-in-law. I apologize if it's been posted before. His 03 F-350 srw 4x4 with the auto tranny cuts out, misses, and blows white smoke when leaving a dead stop, quits when it gears down, then when it levels out into overdrive it starts cutting out again. any ideas? Thanks
Start with the usual check for codes make sure filters are maintained. Also if you can check fuel pressure. Mine stumbles around 1200 to 1800 rpm. i believe its an injector. If you can give more details that would be helpful also and im sure others will chim in to help.
There are other posts on here that are similar in nature, now the fun begins. Check ficm voltage, again check fuel pressure, if possible see if there are any bubbles in secondary fuel filter. All the info is in tech folder. With mine it was a process of elimination that saves money instead of throwing parts at these babies.
Yes both fuel filters were changed; the one on the frame & the one on the motor. The white smoke is not coolant, it's definitley fuel. Leaning toward injector....
Thanks everyone.

What a great post!
So many people want to be told exactly what is wrong and how to fix it without ANY diagnostic testing or troubleshooting effort on their part! Unfortunately, these 6.0L's can be complicated.
A TON of effort was put into the posts in the Tech Folder and that info can save some BIG bucks, but it usually does take some effort to get to the root cause.
timberon94f350 - my previous comments are CERTAINLY not directed at you! I just couldn't resist "bragging" on iduger's post!
It does sound like an injector, but there are other things that can be the root cause. An infra-red temperature gun might be able to help you see if an injector is dumping too much fuel into a cylinder.
The FICM is one other possible culprit. Checking FICM voltage would be a good start. Sometimes it comes down to weak batteries. Low voltage can cause some pretty unusual symptoms.
IMO a fuel pressure gauge (installed on the secondary filter test port) is an absolute necessity. If your friend does not have one, he should consider installing one.
Wire harness chaffing is another possibility. The no-start thread has links to the possible culprits (FICM wiring harness being one of them). The problems sound pretty constant, so it may not be wire chaffing, but it is always good to check.
Still another issue could be the high pressure oil system. Problems with this system can cause issues with injector performance. If you can get your hands on some diagnostic equipment, you can watch the IPR performance along with the ICP pressure.
If I am "over complicating this" hopefully a Tech will jump in and set me straight!
