A budy has an 06 F-250. He has been complaining of hearing a noise like vibrations when driving. Within a few minutes i believe I found the issue. I revealed itself when he shut the truck down. As the turbo was downspooling I could hear it tumping/knocking. You could hear it when the truck was running as well. I pulled the intake tubes off and grabbed the compressor wheel. There is play slightly in and out and up and down. I comparred it to my 03 and mine is solid thankfully. My question for you have you see this and should there be any play at all. I also put my hand on the exhaust side of the turbo during the downspool and could feel it in the housing. Next question I am aware of a Ford Service bulletin for cleaning the exhaust side and the vanes. Could this be a fix? I don't think so if the shaft has play. Anyone have any idea's. Are the turbo's 03-08 the same?
The tolerance is measured in axial play (in and out) and there should be no more then .091mm (0.0036in) for endplay. The radial play tolerance is 0.5mm (0.02in).
If you have this kind of movement or more and you think there may already be some contact that the blades are making to the housing, then I would sure be thinking "replace"!
when I rotated/spun the compressor wheel it did not hit the housing. The amount of play is not a lot. I suspected it was the turbo becuase I could hear it initially from the bottom of the truck when I was looking around. Due you have any other ideas. Could a stuck vane cause this
Start it up and use a hose like a stethoscope. Place it on the turbo housing and listen .... I would be very conservative, if you even THINK he has too much shaft play, I would take it off and tear it down to inspect.
BTW - Any response is only a guess since we can not hear what you hear ........ Turbo "farting" at spool down is somewhat common. Correcting this issue, if excessive, would include a cleaning. For this there are a couple of good threads in the Tech Folder. A cleaning will not help w/ the "play" in the rotating element.
Since you describe more movement on his than yours (and you say you "feel" something at the turbo), I would sure consider opening it up.
Yeah undertand about the response. I informed him I will help all I can but needs to take it to Ford to really tell. I did compare everything to my 03 and I did not experience any of his symptoms. Are you aware of the service bulletin for cleaninig of the vanes due to sticking. And do you really need to have the PCM retuned if you perform this procedure. Your not changing anything electircal. Do you have a preference for a good low cost aftermarket turbo. I will be changing it for him
The Garrett PowerMax is a very good aftermarket turbo - but it isn't cheap.
IMO reprogramming the PCM after a turbo cleaning is not necessary. There is a "re-learn" process that is just by driving that may or may not be necessary. If you don't do it, it will eventually re-learn on its own.
I have a copy of the latest TSB on the turbo cleaning. I can email it if you supply an address.
