Well guys.. had a really bad vibration on the way home the other day and thought it was a u-joint in the rear shaft... Felt exactly like the last time a u-joint went. So I drove it down to get a couple u-joints and brought it home... Crawled under her yesterday and all the u-joints were tight as hell ??? WTF ! So I started looking elsewhere..... pulled the plug to check the level in the rear end and it was caked in metal filings and the oil was super thick ! Soooo I'm taking it down to a friend of my neighbors shop today so he can rebuild it ! He's the rear end guy !!!! NOT me !
Gee Russ, all you'll need is a new trans, and you'll have replaced the drive train. You'll have a new truck!
Seriously, though, it sounds like the pinion bearings let go, allowing everything to get out of alignment inside the housing. Things go south fast when that happens.
With all that metal inside there floating through EVERYTHING including the wheel bearings, might you not consider a wrecking-yard rear housing from hub to hub?
I know that's a pig-in-a-poke solution, as the newer one could be just as faulty, but a complete rebuild of the rear end isn't gonna' be cheap or easy, by any means!
Sorry to hear Russ. By any chance, besides the vibration, was there any roaring noises, the sound of a rear on its last legs sound??? ICYW, I'm chasing down a noise but I'm not sure where its coming from.

Its a B.C. thing I guess , mines in the shop tomorrow to get a new rear end.
Its been vibrating for 6 months and I couldnt find the vibration until it was worn right out.
Its going to be nice to get rid of the vibration so im happy it finally packed it in.
How much your going to cost?
Sounds like mines going to be around $1500 .
That's all I have left on my drivetrain.
I hope I didn't jinx myself.
Im actually exicited about mine, as ive been babying it along for months now.
I knew something was wrong and couldnt figure it out.
Its going to be nice to get it fixed and be able to put my foot in it again.

You sure are hard on that truck! Are you installing LS or lockers while you're in there?
Thanks for the ideas guys.. I found a set of gears, pinion, and all new seals ! Gears etc are out of an 08 ! The guy is changing it over tonight and tomorrow night at his home shop.. Should be around 800 bucks
Mark.. with 388kms on this truck it has pretty much worn out everything piece by piece ! I'm actually not all that hard on it.. it just has seen a lot of country !
That reminds me, Pop I need to change out the gear oil in the rear axle again.
All 3.5 GALLONS of it.
This is what is in there right now and I'm going to use it again.

Just to warn you, that stuff smells hardcore when it's used and is sticky as heck, lol. I use it in the transfer case of my race car, good stuff, but makes rebuilding a messy chore, lol.
Got the truck back today.. All is good ! The bearings were worn, but everything else looked pretty good. The very rear u-joint was also toast as I first thought.. when I looked at it, it didn't seem to bad. but one cap had no grease in it and was the culprit ! So a combo deal made a real good vibration !
