Ok, so i have read all the 300 to 351 swap pages i can find an im still confused as hell because they all jump around so much. my question is i have a 1989 f150 with a straight 6 with a 5 speed manual.
i understand the trany will bolt up to a 351 but beyond that im lost,
will i need to find mounts and perches for a 351 or will my existing mounts work? and as far as wiring harnesses go will i need a new harness seeing as im going from efi to carbed?
p.s. i will be using a performance unlimited 351w Ford Turn-Key Crate Engine With 425 HP
You need V8 frame perches and engine mounts and the I6 versions must come off or they'll be in the way.
You also need a 28oz flywheel for your transmission, the I6 has 0 imbalance so that flywheel can't be used.
And the wiring harness really doesn't matter since you won't need most of it, I'd suggest removing the engine portion and either making or buying a carb harness for the couple things that will need it like the gauge sensors.
Itl be fine with a stock 351..but as far as pulling, wheeling, or things like that go, it wont last long. ZF is the same transmission just made for all that stuff and ALOT stronger. IMO, A hell of alot more practical.
I would not run a mazda 5-speed behind a 351. Even if its a stock 351. It wont hold up long at all. Its got the wrong ratios and is far to weak. Its only rated to about 320ft/lbs of torque IIRC.
Well that sucks looks like im looking for a trans to, So my next question is use a zf5 or zf6 also will i need new crossmembers and wiring harneses for that
