460/351 conversion engine mount issues

Haven't been in the dentside forum in a while, but a buddy and I just started swapping a 351 into my '78 and we're putting my 460 in a race truck. Both engines have been pulled, but we found that the engine mounts I bought for the 351 going into the '78 do not mount correctly. The '78 has support brackets that are >18" apart, and the 351's need to be about 16". So.....my question is how to get the 351 in the truck in the correct position? Create our own brackets? Find a dentside in a junkyard that had a 351 and pull those brackets? broncograveyard does not have them and L+L's conversion kits are not an option due to price.

Thanks in advance for any information/advice any of you have for us!

-Chris

When I went to the 460 from the 351 in my 79 I had to swap the mount towers on the frame. I believe they were just the soft rivets, been awhile since I did it and mine and the donor truck were 4x4's. Hope that helps.

If you are working on a 2X you need the towers of a 351 or 400 truck.

the '78 is a 2wd, the 351 is from a donor Bronco truck, so 4wd and early 80's (carb'd).

The frames are completely different, so that is the issue.

fellro, are you saying the frames are different and so i need the correct perches, or that it can't be done?

The 79 and older frames are set up completely different than the 80 and later frames, so the parts won't interchange. What you need to find is the proper mounts for each series frame. If you are putting the 460 into the 80 and newer frame, there are factory perches to be had, they mount to the rear of the crossmember that goes under the motor. The 79 and older frames do not put the mounts in the same place. The newer trucks have front steer, the older ones had rear steer. Mounting styles are different. In order to make it all work, you would have to do a bit of fab work. Anything can be done if you have good enough fab skills and are willing to do the work. It just may be a bit easier to do with the proper parts...

Hey TorqueMeister........TA here:
Check this out:
He posted pictures too. Looks like we need some 351M towers.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...1-windsor.html

From that link:
I put a 351 Windsor in my 78 Bronco so I beg to differ with you.
yes the frame mounts will work
you are talking about the mount towers correct
just get the motor mounts for a truck or van with a Windsor
you already know that you have to change the trans with the Windsor right
oh yea, 351M is not a Big Block

Did you have to redrill the towers? It looks like the mounts are sitting back some on the towers. That is the first time I heard of a 351W sitting on 351M towers.

Nope! I noticed that too, I thought maybe I had the mounts reversed? but I swapped them around and it sat in the same spot
it sits there fine as wine, and no its not up against the firewall
trust me when I was asking on all the forums if this would work everyone told me NO! but from all my measurements it would so I gave it a shot? I already had everything to do it so it didn't cost me anything extra to give it a try, I had to swap the output shaft in the Windsor 2whl drive tranny to the bronco short shaft, but that gave me a reason to try my hand at rebuilding a transmission, all worked out well, I have just put the project on hold since I picked up a 76 F250 4x4 Ranger XLT and I'm getting it ready for the road, I'll pick back up on it soon and finish the darn thing
77460ford has givin me a new found inspiration to get it done! but first I need to finish my Battle Tank

Now can anybody point us in the right direction to buy 351M engine towers or brackets?

Here is more info:
Since our project truck is 2wd and all of the info is about 4wd trucks.... I don't know if we should use 2wd 300, 302, 0r 351M towers. I am thinking we need one set of towers (300,302, or 351M) from a 2wd 1973-1979 f100, f150 or maybe even f250/f350......

1978 F250 with a windsor

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Im new to the forum but a friend of mine highly recommend it, and Ive found alot of great info here. My question is, Im putting a 351w in my 78 F250 4x4 and Im having trouble finding motor mount towers. Did Ford every make any for this combination or engine and truck or does anyone make any after market towers. Or is there a tower for another application that might work for this. Any info would help alot. Thanks

You should be able to use the 302 mounts.

FTE also has an engine swapping forum

And use frame towers from 302, 351m, or 400. 302 or 351w engine mounts from 73-96 trucks (not vans) will work.

There are no factory 302 towers for a 4x4. Just use any towers from a 351M/400.
