swap a 351W for my blown up 351M

since i cant find a 351M anywhere in Nj, or Pa, or De i figured i try and swap a 351W into my 77 4x4F150? Ive found almost twenty 351W motors within ten miles of my house all in trucks running, four are all stock with under 100k on them.
So i figured id buy the 351W buy a aluminum carb intake and use my brand new 600cfm edelbrock carb that's made for the 351M motor?
Would i need special motor mounts?
Would the 351W bolt to my 77 C6 transmission?

your 351m and the 351w have different bellhousing patterns.

I don't know about the diesel but a 460 will bolt up to a 351M, 400, 429 but Not to a 351W, 302,289 or the 300-6.

Putting a 351W in place of a 351M can be done but not an easy swap at all.
Different bell housing/tranny
I believe you need modified (as in fab work, not the motor) frame engine towers, I often hear the M and W can use same towers, but I modified mine. I can explain if you want to go that way.
Exhaust is the hardest part as ford didn't put a Windsor (or 302) in the 4x4 F150, so, no-one has headers. Maybe manifold exhaust would be easy enough if that's all that's needed.
Radiator hoses are goofy too. But not too bad.

I would Find a good 400 and put on an intake, cam and your carb. Easiest way out. 400's are good engines. If you really want to wake it up, get a set of heads. Think I've read the 400 can get better mileage than he 351m.

The 400 does seem to get better mileage than the 351M. Got 11 mpg in the 400 and 8 mpg with the 351.

Agreed with Dave145. As that has been my experience as well. However with that said my 400 was completely stock. But my 351 was mildly warmed over. Not sure as to the extent, but I know it has an edelbrock performer aluminum intake and holly 650 double pumper with man. choke. I'm guessing that it also has a very mild cam upgrade but not sure as I haven't ever torn into it. I'm only guessing on that because I read some where right after I bought the truck that there was a performance kit that a guy could but that included all of these items. I also know that the original owner use to wheel this truck quite often.

My 400 was stock as well. So stock in fact that it leaked every fluid out of every gasket! My 351 has an edelbrock intake, 1406 carb, and a "mild" cam in it. To what extent I have no idea.
