FIRST START ISSUES AFTER FULL ENGINE HEAD RECONDITIONING

2005 6.0 PSD 130,000 mi.:

Hello everyone. I've just finnished putting everything toghether on my client's 6.0 after performing full engine head job (both). EGR cooler failed and you'll probably know the rest...

Anyway both heads where fully reconditioned on mach' shop, valve seals guides and everything. Brand new head gaskets, studs, full gasket set, water pump, thermostat, filters, EGR delete kit, injectors fully ultrasounded reconditioned and tested, + others. Only inner block parts + camshaft where left in place, no exessive wear on cylinders neither on lobes. Assembly process OK with full tech info on hand.

After this kind of job it naturally takes a bit of a crancking for fuel system to purge so engine starts for the first time, so I didn't worried about it at first, it wasn't after several tests that the situation didn't changed a lot, right now it takes around 10 sec. of crancking for the engine to start for good, right then it starts energically with auto idle and everything, but it takes way too much cranking to make it roar. Scan tool shows no codes. My suspects lay on faulty injectors (worked on Diesel lab) or faulty glow plugs (owner assures he changed them recently, his word). Where else should I be looking? What about IPR or ICP?

Any help will be appreciated.

After having the high pressure oil system open it can sometimes take a while to get air out of the system. Longer than normal crank times can be expected for a while. After you get the truck up to normal operating temperature take it out and run it fairly hard and you should be OK. If after a couple of days you still have longer than normal crank times I'd be looking for a high pressure oil leak, but I think you're OK.

FWIW--when I replace injectors in my personal truck I let it get warm and take it for a few WOT throttle runs. It helps remove air much faster.

Ford TSB states it could take up to 12 hard accelerations from 25 to 50 mph to work the air out (after it warms up).

It makes sence, I guess we are just having some normal oil system purge issues wich I didn't expected since this is my first 6.0 PSD deep job and I'm more used to mechanical Diesel injection, as well as less sophisticated "not oil inside" type of electronic common rail injectors. You got to learn something every day! that's what they say... and I'll love to learn a lot more about this beautiful engine!

First thing monday I will let the engine run for a while in place (turbocharger have been rebuilt also, so it needs some break-in anyway) and then will take her for a ride so everything gets back to normal. My probe shows up to range oil pressure (45 to 55 PSI) and all o-rings and gaskets have been replaced, so I'm confident about oil system (knock on wood) Wish me luck. Thank you guys for your help! I'll keep in touch, great community you guys have in here!

I think I'll be visiting more often than I've thought when I've first posted, kinda' like in here! I don't own a Ford truck but I fix many of them. I'll use this site as a source of info any time I'll need, and I'll be more than happy to help any time I'll be qualified to. Thanx 4 the warm welcome! Greetings from Costa Rica!
