Many posts on this here lately. My highway ECT is 181 and city it drops to 178. Yesterday it got a little warm from the heater so I turned it to cool for a bit and the ECT jumped to 189-190. Turn the heater back to warm and it drops back to 181. I am thinking my thermostat needs changing. Does this sound right to you guys. BTW my EOT never gets higher than the ECT by 6-7 degrees.
If it is the original one, it probably needs changing. Normal range is 190 to 200 degrees. But I must admit I am stumped by the fluctuation after changing to cool. Hopefully someone will enlighten us.
I have a new (<6 months old) t-stat and I'll sometimes see those kinds of temps when the weather is cold and I'm not towing or hauling. The t-stat's cheap enough to change out even if it's not shot, but maybe just watch it for a while and see what it does when the weather warms up a bit. If it's still low by spring, get a new one.
Thank for the responses. I am just going to replace it. Is this a part that should be oem or is a aftermarket ok? Also. I see different temp ranges on a search at autozone. Is the 195 degree one good? What do you recommend?
I don't think there's a thing wrong with your thermostat. I replaced mine less than a month ago and it does exactly the same thing with the below normal temp's we're having. Remember that the cooling system on these trucks is pretty dang efficient and with the addition of an extra radiator (heater core) blowing off heat in the cab it can get cooler than normal. Remember.......not ALL the coolant passes through the thermostat all the time. Part of it does get bypassed through various places.

Thanks for the info. It has been nasty cold here, where hasnt it this year. I will watch it for a bit and see what happens like what was previously suggested. Thanks everyone.
Mine stays at 189-190. It never goes oven 190. I think I may need to replace it as I think the spring is week and is opening to early...
Mine was running 173 before I replaced it. The only time it ever goes over 190 is when it first opens in the morning. Nothing wrong with your thermostat.
Hey everyone my 6.0 keeps overheating on me even when coolant is full it just ends up pushing all my fluid back out the top after it gets hot. It only does it in the morning when it is super cold out which is roughly 0 here in Colorado I'm not sure if it's my thermostat... my radiator or what... someone please help it doesn't do it every time just like twice a week...

Pushing out the top of your what? Degas bottle? If so you might have an issue and be better off starting a new thread.

Well it turns out it is my thermostat but it's causing all sorts of problems it's sticking due to the cold weather and not enough antifreeze moving through it to keep it from freezing shut but thanks

Amen to that. A few weeks ago I drove the truck down the mountain from the in-laws. Was about 25F when we left. I let the truck warm up to 120F before we left so we could get some heat on the cab. All downhill for about 20-miles, basically didn't touch the accelerator the whole time. ECT got up to 160F and stayed there until I hit flat ground.
Had the heater on low the whole time to keep the family happy, but I guess between the heater, the Oil and EGR coolers were sucking up all the heat the motor could put out!
Kept it out of tow/haul so the motor would at least inject something into the cylinders. Usually in tow/haul on that grade the injectors are off most of the way!
1-year old stock T-stat that pretty much runs 190F all the time except when towing. Also a brand new stock radiator.
If it consistently stays below 185, change it, your flooding the fuel to it attempting to warm above 185... 186 the engine become more efficient, unless you like 10-12mpg.
