Anybody try something like this on a dentside truck. Putting the super duty brakes from a 2000+ truck onto a '78? I'm just trying to consider options of doing a 4 wheel disc set up, but want to make sure all the parts I am using are going to be readily available at any auto parts store.
since you have a 78 i assume you have front disc brakes? i don't think you will be able to convert the newer super duty setups in your truck seems like it would be better off finding a whole rear axle to swap in. check out jeffs bronco graveyard they have disc brake kits for the rear DANA's for $300 they use G.M rotors and calipers but they dont offer the calipers you need to buy them at a local parts store. i plan on buying this kit i think unless i find something else before i get the money together
i wanted to do the same on my 74 highboy, also i have drums all around do they make a kit to convert the front to disc also, my last 74 2wd had disc but my 4wd has ball and socket and drums IDK if thats the way them came out that year or what?
If you have drums you could possibly mill down you drum brake bearing hub to use the SD disk brake hat. Then all you would need to do is swap in a rear axle to save the effort.
If it is, I'd be pulling a set of discs off a later '70s truck that has front discs, get the I Beams and everything and swap the whole assembly in. The rear, if it's a Dana 60, can be converted over to discs very easy; many articles written on how to do it, but bottom line it can be done for a few hundred bucks.
Check out TSM Brake conversoins. They have a kit just for our trucks at a VERY resonable price. I personaly have not used their system YET, but as the finances permit I will. John
I also have a dually flat bed that I would love to put rear disc brakes on but there kit won't work with 16" dually wheels . I was thinking of the superduty stuff for possible disc brake swap for dually wheels its only a idea for now been researching this for awhile with no luck.
akforceten, what did you or what are you doing if anything to the proportioning valve, booster/master cylinder? I would think that an ajustable proportioning valve would be in order here. Just asking your thoughts. John
Superduty's use a different wheel bolt pattern. You might as well toss the rotors, as they will not slide over any other 8-lug hub...
To add to this, super duties use Hub piloted wheels so you must use the hubs and rims from an SD also. This also means either using the very expensive unit bearing front end setup OR using the even more expensive conversion setups.
