ok the clutch went out in my truck finally today. its a 78 f150 4x4 4spd. it has a 300 in it right now. told myself when the clutch finally fails is wheni put another motor in it. well the time has come. im thinking about a few different routes. first off is a 302 or 351w...my question is if i go that route what all would i have to change? second ive thought about is getting a 351m and maybe swapping in a 400 crank and rods and pistons ect, my question here is with a mild cam and a 4bbl carb what rough guestimates can you make on power output? and last is going with a 390 because i love the engines and i have everything to put one in, bell house clutch pressure plate everything! only hang up there is its not exactly easy to find those around here.
all im asking is some opinions backed up by facts from someone whos ran a similar set up. not trying to start a debate haha
If you stick with a 302 or 351W, you will need to change the mount towers. Don't forget the pilot bearing if the engine you get originally had an automatic. Can't help you on hp figures though.
I am a fan of the 80s model 4 barrel 351W. I've had vans and trucks with that engine and they ran like raped apes without any mods and being old when I got them. My son's 85 F150 has one, and that truck still hauls ***.
i knew the towers would have to be changed. but i wasnt sure about the bell house. heard some say they will and some say they wont. aint tried yet so i dont know for sure.
still undecided haha. mainly has to do with what available. i had an 81 with a 351m in it that had the biggest cam i could put in it before having to have a stall and a performer alum intake with a 600 cfm edel on it. that motor had quite a bit of power. i miss it lol

ive got a strong running 351m, a c6, the intermediate shaft, and the mounts i would gladly trade you for your motor and trans if you wanna pay shipping.
this one runs pretty good, when i bought it i litterally put everything on the outside of the engine on it new. everything but the alt. everything else has maybe 1000 miles if im lucky. only bad thing about it is the valve guides are bad and it has a bad lifter in it. was going to put new rod bearings and oil pump in it just so i know its good but decided to go a dif route. id settle for a 351m and buy me a 390 and build me one hell of a motor haha
