Heater box quick strip

The guy at the jy has a 351W 84 XLT with A/C ready to go to the crusher in a couple of days, and I want to get all the heater ducts and blower box from under the hood before I lose them. I have to go there in the morning tomorrow, and I'll have no more than a hour or two to get them.

He's giving them to me for free.

What is the quickest way to strip them out of the donor? I hope to get the DSII dist and harness and module, the Motorcraft carb, and anything else I have time for. The quicker I can get the duct-work out, the more other goodies I will be able to salvage.

Help!!

Well....

Go PREPARED. Know what sockets you need for EVERYTHING. That's a time saver in itself. You don't want to be rummaging around in a bunch of tools looking for the correct socket. I believe the heater box uses 5/16 screws, but don't quote me on that.

Take a look under your hood and see what's needed to take your box off and whatever else, and then apply that knowledge to stripping the other one. Shouldn't be that hard as long as you have mechanical knowledge and all the right tools. Hell, that's how I learned to work on cars and became a mechanic, I started stripping cars when I was 15.

Taking things off/apart is the easy part, when you need to put them back on/together is when it gets complicated

In this case, taking it apart it the whole point. I'll put it back together at my leisure this spring.

I'm hoping for tips that will expedite the removal like hidden bolts, remove this first tips, remove that to get to this, those kind of things. I have a full tool bag, hack-saw, and bolt cutters.

I can strip the dash in short order, done it a few times for cleaning, but haven't gotten to the guts of it yet.

I'll do as you suggest and try to get the most useful tools separated out before I go in there, but I'm carrying everything with me.

Pay him a 20 spot to give you some extra time. The parts you grab are several times more valuable. If ya need the cash I will send you the $20 spot to grab me the turn signal emblems, grill/head light surrounds, bezel, and cluster if its tach model.

My time to do this is based on that I have to take off from my shop to do this, and I can only spare a few hours. The jy's huge mobile crusher will be here Thursday morning, and assembled for work by Friday. Tomorrow is the only opportunity I have to do this, and I can't spare the whole day...I really can't.

I have already hit this truck once. Got the tach cluster and headlight surrounds for myself. PM me about the cluster bezel, I have it here, and I'll take a pic of it for you. The radio bezel is cut, and not very prettily.

Blinker emblems? The term escapes me...

Bring metric sockets and a 1/4" drive ratchet. Extensions. Maybe a swivel. Pliers. Wire
cutters. Screwdrivers. Maybe a Z-shaped screwdriver with both phillips + bladed ends.

This truck is getting destroyed so keep what I say in mind.

Do not work the way you would at home or at the pull a part. Take a circular saw and a sawzall. If the dashboard is not of interest then cut it out of the way. Maximum carnage to anything between you and what you need. Make the extraction fast and easy for yourself. Cut your wiring harness way past what you really need. This is field surgery. You can straighten and pretty up everything when you are at home.

Go with the motto: No good parts left behind.

None of it is going to look good as a cube.

Cut the roof off it makes it easier. I cut two 80's model camaros into a series of hand held pieces with a regular corded power saw and a wood blade. I went through the windshields and all. My friend could not believe it. I was very relaxed for the next few days. Nothing like chopping away at a chevy.

You're the man!!

Another good argument to present to the wife for getting a portable generator. So sad I don't have one for the job tomorrow.

I'll keep in mind the field surgery idea though.

Yeah, I didn't even take into account my favorite too; the sawzall. That's what I use to strip the cars I scrap all of the time.

Anyway, let us know how you did!

OH!!! The pain...

Went there this morning with the intention of getting the hood first. It was perfect, the right color, and completely shiny. When I got there this morning, it looked like they had dropped an engine dead center on it. I had to pry the sucker open in order to get to the rest of the things I was there for. Oh well.

So anyway, I got the DSII dist. It seems in good shape. Shaft doesn't wobble or anything. Also got the coil and complete DSII harness. Got the 4v carb. Not sure what I'm dealing with there yet, just added it to the pile. Got vacuum trees, and coolant bottle. Got the heater blower box and AC evaporator box.

Inside. Got ALL the ductwork. Got the rear post panels, the ones that are behind the seat where the seatbelts go through. Both are in excellent condition. Mine were trashed. Got the seat belts. Needed them also. Got the plastic covers that are on the side of the bench seat latch. Mine were missing. Got the kick panels. Got the F150 and XLT emblems off of the fenders. Most other trim was either missing or trashed.

Not sure what else. I was throwing parts into the bed of my truck as I was stripping them off the donor. I'll unload later this afternoon.

Goodies galore. I'm still hurting over that hood though.... 3 hours work. I guess I did ok.

So I ended up with a Holley 4180 (E5TE-9510-ABA). Is this carb worth messing with? Looks like there was a leak at the tube that connects the two bowls. PO took JB Weld and slopped up the tube at both ends to stop the leak. Man, it's just two little "O" rings...what a lamer!! I'm sure I can get the crap off with my dremel tool for a rebuild, but is it worth it?

Also, how do I inspect the distributor I got? How do I tell if IT'S any good?

Just went through my "collection" and found I have 3 compleat heater/ac boxes! But no resistor blocks in them....and a brand new heater core in one, which I could of used in my 89 F250 but got a new one last month

The good ole sawzzall and a inverter, does wonders to some a hole's car.... made it into a convertable for the jerk! To bad all the junkyards I go to WILL NOT let you bring that into the yard. One yard tossed someone out for haveing a cordless drill!

Last time I got a deal like yours, I TOOK almost the whole truck! left just a stripped cab and chassis! Just my Dad and I and 4 hours work got everything for my 84 F250 to get it running and looking better all for a case of beer!
