Headlight Switch numbers question

Good afternoon everyone.

The headlight switch on my 65 f100 is acting up. When I turn it to the left to brighten the inst. panel the light will flicker on the cluster. Sometimes is goes out but if I turn it, the light on the inst. panel will come back on. The headlights work fine as does the dome light.

Before I buy a new switch, any advice? Contact cleaner?? Lubrication? Also, Dennis Carpenter lists TWO switched for the 65 f100. Which is the correct number for that year? Finally, how do I remove the pull handle to remove the switch? Thanks.

There's a little button on the switch that you depress-then the **** & shaft will pull right out.

Have a look at this picture. This switch is from a '67, but yours will be similar. The contact arm and the spring-like thing have to make good, constant contact. These are the parts within the yellow circle. Try using "contact cleaner" first, if that doesn't fix the problem you'll have to use a small file to clean the bottom of the contact arm. Be gentle - that arm is fragile.

According to DC's 2009 1957/66 truck parts catalog (on paper), he lists ONE switch for 1965 F100's (D3ZZ-11654-A-he claims: 1965/72 F100/600 which, btw...are the wrong applications ), but...

As original, there were TWO switches used in 1965/66 F100/350's. Both have since been replaced by a 3rd.

D3ZZ-11654-A (replaced C5DZ-11654-A, C5TZ-11654-A, C5TZ-11654-C) .. Headlamp Switch Kit (Motorcraft SW1245) / Available from Ford.

MSRP: $56.80 // FTE Ford Dealer Parts Dept sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM price: $30.67 // PartsGuyEd = Horizon Ford in Seattle WA

Fits: 1965/66 F100/1100 / 1967 F100/600 / 1968/72 F100/350 // 1966/75 Bronco / 1965/70 Falcon / 1966 & 1971 Mustang / 1970/72 Maverick/Comet and etc etc etc.

Why buy the switch from Carpenter (he wants $50.00), when a local autoparts store prolly has it, or from PartsGuyEd for less?

The headlamp switch's rheostat is made from a ceramic material. When it cracks, the dash lights flicker, eventually stop working.

For that price, (and considering LMC is selling it), it's prolly made in China.

The original switch went 45 + years without failing. How long will the Chinese switch last before it fails?

People complain about the three TRILLION dollar trade imbalance the US has with China, but do not consider that when buying autoparts...or from places that sell mostly Chinese made goods like Wal-Mart.

I'm with NumberDummy. I am TIRED of Chinese crap. Are Chinese parts cheap? Yes. Does buying Chinese cost American Jobs and destroy communities? No Doubt. I'll pay more for American - we can't survive as a nation if we don't make stuff.

If people in this country don't wise up real soon, we just may not recover. My brother thinks its already too late and we're just too dumb to know it. He may just be right.
