Drivers side blinker will not work with headlights on??
Having an issue. my drivers side front blinker works, blinks just fine until I turn on the parking lights or the headlights then it no longer blinks? I've checked grounds and nothing appears to help?
both front blinker lamp assemblies are new from Dennis Carpenter. I thought about ordering a new headlight switch but thought I'd check here first to see if anyone had any ideas?
All the other blinkers work properly except the drivers side front. Everything was working correctly before the restoration work. None of the wiring was monkeyed with but all the switches were pulled out of the dash. I removed the headlight switch and cleaned it really well but the drivers side blinker still won't blink with the headlights on. It blinks fine when the headlights are off.
Bad ground somewhere is my guess. Most of these problems really are not that complicated if you have a test light and an ohm meter. Clean the body grounds first and see what happens.
I've gone through and checked the body grounds. The only grounds the blinker assembly and headlight have ground to the radiator support. There is no change in behavior even when I unbolt the ground wire completely. Is there another ground somewhere else that I might be missing?
I agree with Willow.
I do not want to insult you but have you used the old bulb? Put it to the wire wheel to clean up the brass and base lead?
A ground to the radiator support may not be a true ground. There are bolts go go through until the current path gets back to the battery. A high-resistance ground can kill you.
This is a tough one.
My suggestion is to run a wire directly from the casing of your new DC part to the - terminal of the battery.
Grounds do odd things on this old iron.

You stated you installed new parking light assemblies. These housings don't have a separate ground wire, they ground through the mounting bolts to the stone guard. If the passenger side is working right the stone guard would have to be grounded. It sounds like the ground on the drivers side parking light is feeding back through the turn signal. You may need to clean the metal where the housing bolts on, or add star washers to those bolts.
Thanks for the suggestions. There is a new bulb in the housing but yes there is also fresh paint all around and the radiator support was powder coated as well. I'll go check where the blinker housing it's self it bolted in and run a ground wire from the housing to the battery to check that ground. That may well be the answer. Will do that this afternoon when I get back to the house and keep you posted.
OK, First I ran a ground straight from the negative terminal on the battery to the blinker housing with gator clips. there was no change in behavior so I took the lens cover off. Turns out the drivers side blinker is actually blinking when the headlights/parking lights are on but the parking light half of the bulb on the drivers side is burning so bright that you can't tell the blinker is blinking. I took both lens cover off, cleaned out the sockets and changed bulbs but no change even with the fresh ground wire.
So now that I know the blinker is actually blinking but being drowned out by the parking light burning so brightly, what would cause that? Would have thought that if it were a grounding problem running a ground wire from the blinker housing to the negative terminal on the battery would have solved it?
Again I really appreciate the help and the suggestions! Thanks!
Sounds like the wiring is hooked up backwards. The brighter side of the bulb should be the turn signal. Even if the wires are color coded, they could have gotten turned in the base.

Bingo! Not the first time I have seen this. I have purchased more than one new assembly's that were wired backwards.
good thought. I'll pull out the assembly this afternoon and switch the wires and see if that fixes it. Thanks again! I'll let you know how it comes out!
