So whats the skinny on napa engine kits? Are they any good? Stay away from them? I took my 390 crank there to get cleaned up and figured id check out the prices. I found a master kit for 500 bucks. It is made by a company Clevelite I think..? Comes with a new cam, cam, crank, and rod bearings, pistons, rings, timing gear/chain,oil pump and a full gasket set. I also found a kit a from summit for 450 bucks with all of the same minus the new cam. The cam I have is ok and am just wondering which kit is a better deal. Anyone have experience in comparison of these kits(Napa and summit)? I dont want to be stuck pulling this motor in a year to rebuild it.
jbulson, My son and I used a NAPA kit when we went through the 460 we swapped into our 82 3/4 ton 4x4. Everything seemed to be good quality, it was Clevite also. I chose to have moly rings with the kit, and got pistons also. Mine had no cam or timing set.
You could probably do better on prices though, through someone else. After all was said and done, I though they were pretty high on their prices. I just got the parts there because thats where I had my machine work done. There are other kits out there that are just as good of quality, I'm sure. Just stay with with brand names and you should be fine.
www.northernautoparts.com has a master o/h kit for $336.71 plus freight for a 390. Sealed Power,Cloyes,Hastings,Melling,etc.-all good brands but I always upgrade to Felpro gaskets[another $12,I think. You can get other upgrades-Comp Cam,roller timing set, etc. for more money.I've been buying from them for years and am completely satisfied.
When you order your engine kit, upgrade to a TRUE double roller chain, and a hardened intermediate oil pump shaft. Hyperutectic pistons are nice too Course, for dirt cheap prices on good stuff, try PAW. You can find their two page add in most car magazines (the BIG yellow add) yellow doesnt seem to show up very well on a white background.... Summit racing and jegs have fair prices too, but offer better rertun policies, and customer service.
IMHO, if you are not having the block bored, I would use cast rings, resist the urge to upgrade to moly....
