I recently bought an 2003 6.0l diesel Excursion; it now has 125,000 miles. The truck does not like a cold start - and I'm not talking about freezing temperatures. There is no power for the first minute or so of driving. After about two minutes of driving (and before the engine is warmed up) the truck performs fine. I just did two round-trips NY - Miami and the truck was a pleasure to drive - but that first minute or so in the morning is kind of scary. Any idea what could be wrong?
Cheers,
Chris
Yup. You got a diesel. It's how it is. Get used to it, or get a gasser, or plug it in. Or, let it warm up a few minutes... Patience! I always plug mine in at night, and in the AM, I start it, drift it out of the garage, then let it idle while I head inside and finish getting ready.
Along with Jay's suggestions, I'd also consider using some 5W40 instead of 15W40 and use a winter Fuel additive like Howe's or Diesel Kleen (white bottle). These combined will help with the cold starts and help the truck with cold weather operation.
Even if you don't use 15W40 oil, plugging it in overnight makes all the difference in the morning...
As stated above, I also use Delvac 1 5w-40 oil, changed every 15k miles, with the oil filter every 7500 miles. Makes a HUGE difference when cold cranking, to getting those oil assisted injectors going. Keep in mind you have 4 gallons of oil, and the thick oil is even thicker in the super cold weather, so it's gotta work like hell to pump that oil all over the engine. That's the beauty of variable viscosity oil, 5w40 cold has a thickness of 5, hot has a thickness of 40. 15w40 cold has a thickness of 15, hot has a thickness of 40. End results(hot) are the same, the starting is different. HOwever delvac 5w40 is also $150 for 4 gallons, if you can find it cheap.
Thanks for the quick replys. As long as I know nothing appears to be wrong I'm good with it. Now I just have to find out what all these extra gauges are supposed to do ....
@Jaysvx: you write you change oil every 15K. Is that regular oil or synthetic? My mechanic wants me to change every 5k.
Cheers,
Chris
Your mechanic wants to charge you $150-200 to change your oil 3x as often as you really need to, depending on the product quality used. YOu can't be sure what kind of oil he puts in there, though. If he puts in cheapo crap from the dollar store, you can bet that 5k is even to long to wait.
However if you do it yourself, or honestly trust your mechanic, use a product that is of good quality, yes, 15k is easy. I was doing 20k. 13litre volvo's run Delvac 1 for 100k between changes, it's big truck oil. Just don't forget the filter at 7500.
You can see the picture of the big truck:
I currently have 4 gallons of it in my garage waiting for my next oil change in a month.
