Hi, I picked up a complete 68 LTD with a 390 in it!It will be replacing the 360 in my '70 f100. Does anyone know the specs on this thing like HP, torque, Com. Ratio! The vin is 8n62z115919. I will be doing a basic rebuild on it. Is there any problems I should look out for!I'm any auto tech by trade but new to the FE! I assume this thing doesn't have hardined vavle seats, should I have some put in. Whats a reasonable amount to pay for that being done. The head work alone.
thanks,Johnny

I can't tell you specific numbers, but the '68 390 was a good one. It had pistons that actually came all the way up to the top of the deck. I'd say compression should be right around 9.5:1. It's probably a 2bbl, which means it has the smaller intake ports, but that's good for mixture velocity and torque. Have a good machine shop go through the heads and install hardened ex seats, new springs and keepers. If you want to keep compression up, order the early style pistons. When you buy a timing set, make sure that the crank gear is'nt retarded, the timing mark should be directly above the keyway groove. The edelbrock performer will match the small intake ports almost perfectly. Don't forget to cam it up!!!!! sorry for the novel, but I love this stuff
It actually has A 4 bbl carb. I remembered this morning that I had a "fearsome ford" book that had some specs in it . It said that the z code engine has 315hp 427 torq and 10.5 CR. Does that sound about right ?
What cam should I use? Not to radical just a little extra! The intake may have to wait until funds become available.
thanks,Johnny
DUDE, you got lucky, it sounds like a winner. You'll have to check the intake port size. the edelbrock performer rpm matches the bigger ports pretty well. but the performer can be ported to match. If you're not worried about weight, and need to wait for the funds, just use the cast iron factory manifold, they work good, they just weigh 8,000 pounds. As far as a cam, I've had good luck with speed pro, that's what I sell. I am using a CS1011R right now: 292/292, .510/.510, the CS1102R is alittle smaller and might work better for your application.
I would stay away from the single pattern cams. I would recommend a crane 343801 cam for that one. It is basically the closest thing to an improved 390GT/428CJ cam.
Thanks for the help guys! The car has only been started 3-4 times in the last 11 years and its been 4-5 years since the last time!I got it started yesterday by cleaning the points and pouring a little gas in the carb. Of course I had disconnected the fuel line a ran it to a jug of good gas. The carb is all gummed up so it want run on it's on.I'm going to rebuild the carb today. I would like to get it to run and cycle it to normal oper. temp a couple of times then do a Compression test . What is good comp. for one of these FE's?The car has 109,000 miles on it . The anti-freeze is still pretty and green and the oil is clean so I think the engine has been taking care of!
Thanks,Johnny
I just looked up the specs on the 343801 lift was .548/.580. Will that much lift cause the vavles to hit the piston with these stock 10.5's. I guess that stock springs are definatly out also with that cam!How much lope/vacuum does that cam give. I was looking at 343901 it has 260/272 adv dur. and .501/.533.
Like I said I dont know any think about these FE, but i'm willing to learn.I do would the most I can get away with ,but I don't want to have to run a high stall convertor. How about oilpumps should I go with a standard or a high volume. Do these engine have a problem of pumping the pan dry with a HV?
How about transmission both My truck and the car have c-6's which one should I go with?Do you think they where built any different(internally) My truck has a bolt on rear flange where as the car has a slip yoke.
Thanks,johnny
The 901 is a great cam. It will have a very friendly idle. The 801 doesn't necessarily require a higher stall converter. It has that "something extra" you wanted though. It has a 114LCA so it still will give you decent vaccum. I haven't hooked up a real vaccum guage yet but my power brakes work pretty good. They are all drums too. I would recommend new springs with either cam. The valves shouldn't hit your pistons with the 801 cam. I have zero deck flat top pistons with valve reliefs and there is no problem but you should definitely check it out before you finish throwing it back together.
