I have a C-6 in my 1988 f-150. I would like to know why it does not shift form 3rd to 2nd when I slow down. I have to almost come to a complete stop for it to do that. I have rail road tracks near my house that I slow down for to go over and when I give it gas again it is still in 3rd gear. If I increase the throttle very quickly it will then shift into second. Does anyone have this problem or know the cause of it???
I don't like Chilton's, but they're both shop manuals. Haynes is $12 and can be found at most parts stores.
TV is "throttle valve" cable, which runs from the throttle down to the shifter on the L side of the AOD, and it MUST be adjusted correctly for the transmission to shift properly. Driving with it set wrong CAN ruin the transmission. If you want the procedure, e-mail me and I'll attach it to my reply, but don't expect it before tomorrow afternoon.

1988ford stated in his post, he has a C-6, not an AOD. To my knowledge, The C-6 has no TV cable.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Jan-03 AT 01:46 PM (EST)]I'm pretty much guessing here, but I would check/replace the vacuum modulator, and a total change out of the fluid, including the convertor, if it has more than 30K miles on it.
Normally, a bad vacuum module will keep it from shifting up, not down.

Right - I breezed right over that! The TV is only found on the AOD; the C-6 has a vacuum-operated kickdown and a rod/cable kickdown, too. The C-6 cable isn't called a TV cable - its just a cable that replaced the older rod, but there is still an adjustment to the cable which can be found in Haynes.
Maybe I was misunderstood. I wanted my tranmission to shift down when my truck slowed down so I would not have to push the throttle quick and hard for it to shift to 2nd when it should. I made an adjustment on the cable you said and it does not do what I want. I could not tell a difference in town when I made the adjustment so I took it out on the highway I would hardly have to give it more throttle and it would shift into the passing gear. It felt very uncomfortable. But I guess my transmission will be ok the way it is.
I've had that problem on some GM transmissions and it was the governor. It was on the side of the case and just popped out. It has springs on it that move a rod in and out. This could be the problem.

Did you get a Haynes? A C-6 doesn't have OD or a TV cable; just 3 forward gears, a shift rod, a kickdown rod (sometimes a cable), and a vacuum kickdown usually on the R side. Are you sure you have the C-6? The AOD has NO vacuum lines going to it, so that would be a dead giveaway. What's the TRANS code off your door sticker?
