Y-block trans adapter

I bought what i think is a 292 Y block and a sm420 granny 4 speed trans. My question is if that is some sort of adapter that mates the 292 to the 4 speed, and if it is an adapter can any other trans be used with that adapter? Thanks

The answer would seem to be "Yes".

And those transmissions would be, to quote from the following link:

"The front bolt pattern is the consistent GM Muncie / Saginaw four-bolt pattern as found on GM bellhousings and transmissions from the 1940's through the 1990's..........."

The GM Muncie SM420 Transmission - Novak Conversions

That's a powerful strange looking set up there. Are there any names/numbers etc on the casting part, or the red part?

How does the clutch work in that thing?

it looks like the adapter to mount a flathead trans to a y block.

Thanks for the reply.
The numbers on the drivers side of the trans are
W G CO

T 8 D-1A

And on the passenger side is
59T-7006
N 10

The guy i got the setup form said that clutch is that oval shaped piece with the hole in it on the drivers side of the trans.

OK, so now I see that, and I look at the pic of the SM420.

That is not a SM420.

--no PTO is the clue from a distance.

--it's markings tell the tale up close.

W G Co. = Warner Gear Company.

T 8 D 1

Possibly the auxillary trans from 1928 AA trucks.

Here is a T7A1, looks related:

WARNER GEAR CO. T7A-1, WARNER GEAR CO. T7A-1 Torque Converter & Transmission for sale, Used WARNER GEAR CO. T7A-1 Torque Converters & Transmissions at Tradequip.com

More on the T8 and T9:

A real Annntick if you ask me.

thanks for all the help, and there actually is a pto on the passenger side.

I was also told on another forum that it is not a sm420 but either a Warner T-9 or T-98.

I believe thats a clark 5 speed. But the question is, is it a direct drive 5 speed or an overdrive 5 speed.

If it's a Clark, why does it have "WG" cast into it, and T1?

This is said to be a Clark 280v. Blow up the pic and see if you can read the numbers on the side. Or, better yet, find a good Clark image so the OP can compare his trans to a Clark.
