Restoring a Bench seat

My truck is red, my bench seat is blue and in bad shape. I want to take it to an upholstery shop to get it restored in a red color. Any ideas on the expected price or type of material? It is the factory vynle or whatever now. I have no problem with that type of material. Any lessons learned from anybody? Like cheap cloth wears faster, etc.

Thanks

I did my truck. It looks like brand new. I'll try to take some pics and post them tomorrow.

I did mine years ago from a seat cover on Ebay. It was pretty straight forward. You take the hog rings off, peal back the seat cover, and install the new one in reverse order. I took care to save my hog rings and reused them.

I also used a small pair of vice grips, lineman pliers, and needlenose pliers because I didn't have actual hogring pliers. Maybe a little slow, but not overly difficult.

Anybody know where to get new seat foam for cheap?

I just dropped my bench off at an upholstry shop Fri. They said it would be $350 to $400, and that would be to remove all the old stuff, paint any metal seat brackets that are exposed, fix the cushion foam if needed, and put the new cover material on. That may sound like alot but I priced cover replacement kits from LMC and for the cover only they run anywhere from $190-$270. Then if your cushion is shot that's another $150...........Doesnt take long to add up to $400.

I am a purest and decided to reupholster my original red and white Lariat seat that is part vinyl and cloth. Although I haven't done it yet I found a good upholstery shop nearby that specializes in old car restoration projects. They always have someones classic parked in front of their shop.

They quoted me $450 to do my seat in the original pattern but using modern (More durable) fabric and vinyl. here's a photo of my seat before it started to fall apart.

There are a variety of places selling new seat covers. It's not that hard to do. There are a number of web sites out there with step by step directions and pictures. Basically, the tools you'll need are an awl, a pair of hog ring pliers and some hog rings.

If your foam cushions are good, it is even easier. If not, you'll need to replace the foam. It can be a bit of a tight fit putting new covers over new foam.

Mine are at an upholstery shop now. Redoing mine with original type material (vinyl and chain mail vinyl inserts). They are going to tie the springs together (like in a bed to make them stiffer), add some material between the springs and seat foam (so the old seat foam doesn't sink into the springs again), all new materials done just like the original seat covers, and possibly add another 1" of foam to the seat cushion to make them firmer and new fiber board cover for the seat backs. Was quoted ~$700 per seat (two bench seats for my crewcab). This may sound high but I received a similar quote from another upholstery shop in the area and not sure they would have done the complete a job. Most of the cost is in materials as the OEM gray/ silver chain mail vinyl is $100 a yard! I chose to have an upholstery shop do it because I can not find a prefabbed seat cover that was like mine (I was looking for authentic original materials & patterns, not just a standard seat cover).

I dropped mine off at a shop, they quoted me $225, it had been recovered years ago and the material in the bottom part was in bad shape so he redid it and charged me $250. It was originally an all black seat, he sewed grey inserts like where the chainmail would have went. I am not ecstatic about how it turned out (just doesnt look totally stock) but its not a bad looking job by any means particularly for the price. I had been quoted $450 at another shop. In hindsight I think I would have prefered the chainmail for a more stock look.

If I remember correctly, the "chain mail" fabric was called Naugaweave back in the day......Just FWIW........

78 PEB, in the original 1978-79 Ford fabrics catalog, it's called Chain mail. I love the pattern and will look nice and original when complete.

NBC-Steve, I agree with bamaf150. That's one nice looking interior. I like to keep it stock looking too.

cant recomend enough for you ask the upholsterer to place some material between the foam and the springs, make it Waaayyy firmer and a better ride.
Im pushing 250 lbs so when I redid mine I used a piece of carpet between the springs and foam knowing the springs would never cut thru the carpet
