Hello All! I am new to the forum and have no experience working on vehicles. Soooo.... I got on here to learn. I just purchased a 78 Ford F150 Custom that was single owned with 134k miles. The owner had the original motor replaced at 100k miles. So the second engine has 34K (351M/5.8L) on it. It was garage kept. The outside looks great as well as does the interior for a 78 with all original. There is no body rust except for a scratch or 2. I had my brother in law look over the vehicle that is knowledgeable in the sorts. Repair question #1:
There is an oil leak on the left side when I climb underneath it appears that its coming from high up (not underneath the vehicle itself). My bro-n-law said valve cover might need to be tightened? How do I get to it?
That's a looong-standing debate. Ford never officially acknolwedged what the M stands for, but of the three names people think it stands for (midland, modified, michigan) modified is the most common and would make the most sense.
The valve covers are the long smooth metal housings on each side of the engine atop the cylinder heads. The oil filler cap is on one; the PCV valve (or breather elbow) is on the other.
Another common high-up oil leak on 351M/400 engines is the oil sending unit, which is on the top of the block behind the intake.
