Is it my Hubs?

I have a 96’ F-250 with the Dana 50 TIB suspension, 351, E4OD, Manual Hubs, and T-case.

It recently snowed here and I needed to use my 4x4 to get out of the ski parking lot. I lock my hubs and put my manual transfer case into 4x4 high. I got out just fine, and when I got on to the highway switched the transfer case to 4x2. Then latter on the road I, when I got up to 60 mph I started to hear a loud clunking sound. I pulled over, unlocked my hubs and started on my way again. I shifted the transfer case in to 4x4 wile moving as a test, no noise.

Does this mean I need to replace my hubs?
Was it because the hubs were in while driving in 4x2?
Is there some tests I could do to the truck while on Jack stands to make sure it's one/both of the hubs?

Any info would be great.

i would try putting it in 4 low if the front driveshat doesnt turn then you might have broken the chain in your t-case.

Hi Lou,

TSB 97-13-22 talks about your problem.

This is what it says...... (Reader's Digest version)

LIGHT TRUCK: 1987-96 BRONCO, F-150, F-250 LD
1987-97 F-250 HD

This TSB article is republished in its entirety to include 1996 and 1997 model year vehicles.

ISSUE:
A driveline vibration or noise may occur when driving a 4X4 truck at highway speeds in a 4X2 mode with the front drive hubs locked. This can occur if the driveline angle is incorrect.
