I know I'm being lazy and the answer is in this site somewhere but I need a point in the right direction.
Trying to help my brother out with his 2002 7.3 Powerstroke, every once in a while it will either not start or blow alot of white smoke and or miss, when this happens a engine light comes on but we have been anable with barrowed scanners to get a code out.
Is there some trick to just get the light to flash like in older vehicles or do we somehow need to find a way to spit it out with a reader?
Or any other ideas what direction to look in on this issue?
Your problem with the no-start or smokey strart is probably the injectors not having enough oil pressure to properly "spray the fuel" several things can cause this.
A. you don't have enough oil in the engine, or not keeping the HPOP resevoir full (means weak primary oil pump)
B. your injector o-rings are leaking until warmed up alittle. (most likely the cauase)
C. Your Hi pressure system is failing (ICP sensor, IPR o-rings or HPOP is getting weak.
How many miles on the rig, any mods or bone stock?
Another reason for the miss and hard start and the Check Engine Light would be a loose plastic 9 pin connector/s under your valve cover/s. If is happens and then clears up, this could be the problem.. If you pull the fault codes and see a P1316, it's the problem.. SEE my picture gallery for a loose connector.. If you find this, be sure to shim the locking tabs on the connector to keep this from happening again..(the 50 cent fix)
Or if it's been cold outside and you get lots of white smoke it could be a glow plug / GPR issue. Read the cold start sticky at the top of the page and have him test the glow plug system.
Most inexpensive code readers will not read codes on the 7.3 engine. The free scans from the parts stores won't work either.
Chris.. would he get CEL with bad glow plugs or GPR.. ?
Only on a CA model which would have thrown a light earlier, but excessive cranking trying to get something to start might trip the light for some phantom issue while the PCM has been trying to figure out why the truck didn't start. It might try to blame something it can monitor for something it can't monitor.
hard start on mine and a plume of white smoke and rough running for about 20 seconds...looked at glow plug relay and it was melted...new stancor relay (salute Guzzle) and she is all better now
OK yesterday I jumped into this with too little info, not really enough info to work with yet.
Yesterday we replaced the fuel filter, he had been putting agricultural fuel in it and it had been about 20,000 on the filter. We thought we fixed it, it ran better that evening, however today it is worse.
Here's what we got;
Missing under power, not at idle
A couple times at high rpms and high throttle smoothed out at 2800-3000 RPM
Smooth at idle
Starts fine, warms up fine in driveway, 1/2 mile after starting to drive starts to miss badly.
No smoke
CEL light on
It is clear we need to find a good code reader, my inexepinsive one will not work on his truck, I'm starting a new thread for shopping recomendations for a code reader.
Are you looking for a good scanner or just a good deal on one? Dennis has a sale on some old tuners that will work as a scanner right now (if there are any left) Smokin' Deals
