I got a 1977 F150 400/C6 4x4, and I am considering a swap to manual.
I wanna keep the 4x4, what gearbox do I go for, and do I need to change anything other than flexiplate for a flywheel/clutch set up and pedals?
Will it help with gas mileage?
Cheers,
Shane
Gas mileage? Automatics are less efficient and have more parasitic power loss than manual trannys. The mileage gains won't be very much....especially with a 4x4. Maybe 2-3 mpg.
One thing I found out by doing a swap is to make sure your engine crank shaft was machined for the pilot bushing needed for the input shaft of a manual trans, if not it will require the removal of crank to have it machined resulting in higher costs if you are on a budget, a good donor vehicle is a plus.
Pilot bushing avail at auto parts store. Get a donor truck, you need a lot of parts that you don't want to hunt down. You need everything from the pilot bushing back to rear and to the front rear. Yes the drive shafts will be different length's. Steering column. frame mount for z bar clutch petal. Don't forget the wire that eliminates the netural safty switch, you will pull your hair out trying to get it started.

Good luck
Say what? You can pull most of these parts can be had.for very cheap. As far as the nss, the np435 has a switch on it. Simple as running new wire from the old nss pig tail down to the switch.
Where I live I can buy an old rust bucket for a couple hundred bucks. Way cheaper than I could ever buy all the parts, besides having the donor there saves time running around. Take what is left to recycle yard and get $300.00 back. no switch on 4 speed or at least any I ever owned.
