It got down to 20 last night and this morning the beast had about 15 seconds of 'romps' when starting. I left the key in the 'wait to start' position for about 1 minute before starting.
Is this behavior considered normal or expected for this temperature or should I start the glow plug and relay check. I also have read that synthetic oil would help.
It rarely gets down to 20 degrees farenheight in South Texas.
Switch to syn 5w40 will stop your romps... forever.. your engine will run quieter, and they say you get better fuel economy and you can extend your oil changes..you don't have to plug in the engine heater (unless it below 0* maybe).. it better for your turbo too..
Mine would romp at 20 degrees. It was very hard to start if temps were lower than that. I switched to the 5w40 syn and had no troubles. I'm trying the 10w40 syn blend now. It is a little harder on the starting with our very cold temps lately but still no romps
Good feedback. Just went out and put a voltmeter on the glow plug relay. It measured 10.27 volts for about 2 minutes, then clicked off and voltage went to zero.
Guess I'll ohm check a glow plug just for grins when I go back out there. Just to clarify, do I check the ohms during the initial turn of the key to 'wait to start', or can I check them at any time?
I haven't looked at my links but you don't stab the wires! You unplug the 9 pin connector and check them going under the valve cover. No power! Take the keys out the ignition.
I don't think romps at 20 degrees is normal at all. -7 here two nights ago, cycled key a couple times, started right up. Little black smoke, noisy, but smooth running. No diesel additives either, just whatever local gas station is selling, must be winter blend. Yes, I do run synthetic 5w/40. When it's 20 dergrees out, shoot almost no different starting than when it's 60 out!
It was down to 16 or 18 the other night here in Baytown, and I had no romps.
I haven't checked my gpr or ohm'd the glowplugs yet. I just get a puff of white smoke on startup after waiting 15-20 secs to start.
I do however have Rotella synthice oil in her though.

When checking the ohms at the 9 pin harness connection, no power at all.
I would have romps at lower 20's and colder with 15-40 Rotella. This Fall I switched to Rotella T6 synthetic and that eliminated the problem. I plan on running the synthetic year around in the future. The truck has about 140K on it.
