Just redid mine again after two years. One more chip had come loose and the display was intermittent again. fixed that and checked the others all OK now.
My board had two of the copper coils on it and both were loose. re soldered those and i now have a working compass for the first time in years.
Thank you gentlemen( and ladies) for the help in figuring this out.
I count this as a win for sure.
