first off i have a super bad oil leak. Will leave about a 12-14in puddle of oil on the garage floor in about 1 hour. i thought it was coming from the drivers side valve cover. I tightened the bolts because two of them i could have taken out by hand. This seemed to do nothing. What are the most likely places this leak could be coming from. It is on the drivers side and runs down the back of the motor drips onto the front drive shaft and then runs down the u-joint and then on my floor. second when i left this morning my turbo was extremely loud, it sound like i was running about 100lbs of boost. could these be related. The oil supply line did not appear to be the cluprit of the leak.
That does sound related. Related like there is an oil leak before or at the turbo so its not getting enough oil to run. Sounds like the first thing you need to do is clean the motor really well to get all the old gunk off, then see where the leak starts.
Running down the back could be coming from the turbo oil return, or the stock pressure sensor location.
So i kinda screwed up. The loud turbo was from me not getting rubber piece that holds the air intake to the turbo on the turbo all the way. a small part of it on the bottom was folded up. I also just put a new valve cover gasket on the drivers side and went for a test drive to get the oil back to temp to see if it is still leaking. Turbo sounds great with the everything hooked up correctly. There is no oil around the turbo return or oil pressure unit. I am pretty sure it was the valve cover, hoping anyway.
These engines make lots of heat, given enough run time said heat will bake the VC gasket hard and solid (and brittle too) - once that happens no amount of tightening the bolts will help the gaskets reseal. The newest of these engines is at this point 16 years old, if the VC gaskets have never been changed chances are they are by now petrified for the most part...
Well then, there you have it. You may wanna replace the other v/c gasket too, cause that's where your starter is and those generally don't like being soaked in oil.
