HUGE Oil leak. Help needed!!
I have a F250 4x4 with the V8 Windsor engine. The engine runs flawlessly at idle or driving speeds and there is NO smoke coming from the exhaust pipe (white or black). I do have a bad oil leak somewhere in the engine. Oil is all over the engine compartment on the driver side and is even spraying up on the hood when driving. The oil doesn't spray up when the truck is parked and idleing. It only leaks oil while the engine is running and after about 30 seconds you can see the oil dripping under the truck. Once the engine is shut down, the oil stops dripping (obviously it drips a few minutes after shutdown, but my point is if the truck sets it doesn't seem to be losing oil). Where could this oil be coming from? Could it simply be the valve cover? I don't think it has anything to do with the head itself because the truck is NOT burning oil in the combustion chamber. The leak seems to be localized towards the driverside rear of the engine. What should I be looking for. Any help would be great!

Losing oil? I've put in 3 quarts over the last 100 miles. Like I said its a HUGE leak. It is not the power steering pump...this is defently oil. Does the upper manifold have any direct contact with oil? The Windsor MFI engine has two seperate manifolds [ upper and lower ]. Could I be losing this much oil from just the valve cover?

Its not loseing oil when its not running. Its spraying a lot of oil on the driver side. I would check the oil filter. You might have a pin hole or the seal pushed out. AS long as you are losing engine oil when its running. If the engine oil does not go down even when running. I would say PS but that shoudl empty pretty quick. Could be a trans line got a hole in it. That would only have pressure when the motor is running.
After rereading you say the rear of the engine. I still say check the oil filter. Can you tell what kind of oil it is? Are you sure its engine oil? If so then keep with the engine stuff. I dont think theres that much pressure under the valve cover to make it spray hard. Your Oil Pressure sending unit could be bad too. That will either come off the block above the oil filter.

Well, I finally solved all the issues with the oil leak. I just purchased this truck about a week ago and plan on using it for a work truck. It only has 112,000 miles on it, so I'm guessing it has been setting for quit some time. With a little help from a buddy I found all the oil leaks...Crank seal and rear main seal. Once the timing chain cover came off it was easy to tell the timing chain needed replacing too. After two days of work all the oil leaks are fixed. Truck runs like new! Thanks for all the ideas. This is my first FORD.
