Talking T444 into a chevy P-30 MH.

Well, this is my first post!!!

my interest is that since I have a hobby that is gasoline intensive, I have an RV, a Fleetwood Southwind 1989, with a chevy 454 carburated and a 400 HD tranny, wheight of the vehicle is little past 12K#, rear end is dana 70 5.10 (or something close) and use 8r 19.5 tires. have overhauled the carb (rochester), Hperf distribuitor, from summit Racing, long tube headers, big exhaust, cold air intake, and Im getting 9-10mpg.

found an exelent and very cheap T444 (A175F) from a low mileage, (I think from a thomas snub nose) the flywheel was from a manual transmision. it came as a cut from the firewall forward, so it came with all rads and metal hoses, found the IDM (NAVISTAR 5D07, 1807248C3. BAR CODE # ZZS00TVU) and the wiring loom was ok, a few cut wires but nothing serious... UNFORTUNATELLY, did not came with ECM, nor throttle pedal, instrument panel (or the dreaded SES light for that mater).

The objective is to: first start it and throttle freely, THEN to transplant the engine mated to an allison trany 545 (I liked the close ratio 5 sp, unfortunatelly only 1:1 final drive ratio) I have also acces to hyd converter and flywheel, gas pedal, but have NO IDEA of what number to buy for the ECM, I hope I can get away without the need to buy an instrument panel, also can fab myself all the motor muonts (own a metal shop).

the thing is that in our region the diesel is subsidized (sp?) and the cost is about 25% LESS than reg gas, so if my goal of getting 16-18MPG Ill be getting cost per mile less than HALF than gas....

Im not doing this expecting a "return of my investment" more of a mechanical exercise, "wrenching therapy", and personal pride!!!!!

would you guys help me with my crazy adventure???!!!!

First, WELCOME to FTE!

It will be interesting to see if anyone even answers you, except to say you're crazy

This is a Ford Truck Enthusiasts' web site. Nothing in that setup is Ford-related, but you're welcome to post here anyways

really?

I for one dont care what you are putting this in.It is a swap and chebbie did not make a diesel worth a crap until the duratrash(wich I like, dont tell anyone)...SO why not.I would go with a sae#2 adapter that you have and get an industrial allison1000 and a destroked controller to control the trans. This will be a very good truck to drive after.I had a 545 but could not get a rear gear to work with my engine. The lack of overdrive, and lockup converter just wont work. And not sure how that mechanical tv cable will work with a throttle other than the original assy.you will most likely want the proper industrial pcm to control the combo if you retain the 545.You will want to keep that 7.3 under 2krpm...That means you will prob want a 3.07 or so rear ratio....just saying, good luck and let us know how it goes.

Exclamation

I understand that I will need to change the rear end ratio, and maybe you are convincing me about quitting the 545, but I dont want to use any more electronics, I dont know if there are other automatic trannys, w/o major electronics (besides some sort of simple controler that controls just 4-5 valve-solenoids).

definetelly I have to buy the throttle pedal assy!

And that the whole purpose of my quest: to find the correct ECM, with the most aproximate numbers.

and found the engine serial number, kinda odd numbered because I found "unexpected" 4 where there should be a 3.

You gas engine to Diesel transplant.

Hi, I have a 94 Fleetwood Pace arrow, with the 454, 4 speed tranny. Best gas mileage is 5 to 7, depending which way wind is blowing...lol. Please keep me updated on how you make out with this project. I may want to end up trying this out. The inside of mine looks as if it was never slept in. Only 38,000 actual miles. Good luck with you engine exchange. I wish I had the info you were looking for...Good Luck..Tnman

If you find one with no electronics let me know.I looked pretty insensively before I bought the 1000 with no results. It would be nice to not have the controller since I did the 12v so I would not have so much work. Also a gear vendors od would be nice but with the rear drum brake it is not an option that I can figure.Nees an old brownie box od that could be divorced!

Lightbulb

Ive seen one that might suit our "best wishes", and after being a bit "dissapoined" of the 545 characteristics, (4 speed, non lockup converter, no OD) maybe I'll look into the ALLISON MD 3060P.
is a true 6 speed w/ 2 OD, converter locks up from 3rd to 6th!, shifts quick, has decent gear ratios, trans brake, retarder cappable, 33,000+ GVW.
I havent beeing "into it" too much. but a little info that I got is it needs a TPS, a speed sensor in the engine (hall sensor perhaps?) speed sensor in the shaft (wheel speed) a shift controller (push button) which I suspect is also the "controller" of the whole thing.

but first I have to start the dam engine!
this week Ill put more attention to the wiring harness.

with the 1000 I was expecting to be anightmare because of the fouth gen electronics!!!!
I WOULDNT EVEN CONSIDER IT!

well, the same thing happened to me with the t444, I got it from a chance-bussines, Ive seen stand alone controlers for the 1000's, now im stuck with a complex "problem" that I have to see with optimistic eyes, and be ABSOLUTE CERTAIN that I can run and throttle the engine fully BEFORE starting to disasemble (tear apart!) a perfectly good running rig just "for fun and pride".
