IP questions

I have a 1984 F350 with a 1989 7.3 IDI that may or may not have the original IP. There are blue dots of paint on some of the screws. It has the 12:00 timing mark on the pump and housing, but there is a second, shorter mark on the pump, about 1/8 inch from the old one, as if the timing were advanced a bit. The engine smokes a little when its cold and the timing is advanced, but when it warms up and the timing avance is off, there is alot more smoke. It is kind of a bluish grey smoke. It is hard to start when cold, (maybe due to glow plug issues) but it starts right up when warm, even an hour or so later.

I just aquired a 1985 F250 with a 1993 7.3 IDI. I was told they put about 20,000 miles on the engine, which they said was rebuilt. I can't take anything as 100% truth, but I see gasket sealer in a few places, like the oil filler. I only see the 12:00 timing marks on this one, and the marks are only a tiny hair from lining up. Not sure if this one is the original IP to this one either. I cannot start this one, because there are too many parts missing, (solenoid, glow plug relay, etc) and some of the wires are burnt, cut, etc.

My question is, will the 93 pump be compatible with the 89? I will need to take off the cover in front of the gears and line up the timing marks, correct? Or should I spent the time and money getting the 93 running first, and then change IP, or maybe the swap the whole engine.

I paid nothing for the first truck, and buried a guys dead horse, with my backhoe, for the second one.

Also, the 1989 7.3 has a miss to it. Possibly injectors? Better to get new ones or use the ones from the 93 and see how it goes?
The 89 is manual transmission & the 93 is auto, suggestions on which I should use?
Thank in advance.
George

G M V,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

With the second engine parts questionalble condition, I would look for a new IP and injectors for the 89 engine.

Right now there is a thread "U haul parts" or something like that where you can pick up IP's and injectors for cheap.

If you remove the IP using the correct method, no need to pull the front of the engine off.
The trick, never remove the IP drive gear from the cam gear.
As long as they stay meshed the IP will be in time with the cam and crank shaft.

You probably should also read about cleaning the CDR, should be done every second oil change.
