Cleaning Drum Brakes Question...

I just bought a new set of Cragars and Firehawk Indy 500 tires for my truck (pics of that later). I have disc brakes in the front, drums in the back. I decided to paint my back drums black so they don't show their rustiness through my brand new Cragars!

While I have the drum off and painted, I'd like to clean up the interior of the brakes. I know I can spray brake cleaner on the shoes and the drum, but it it ok to spray brake cleaner on interior parts without harming it? (Don't know if it would affect the rubber parts in there.....)

Or should I just use the air compressor to clean it up?

Thanks....

Yes it is fine.

I have done it for years will no problems, but if you prefer use water and simple green.

The brake parts cleaner won't hurt the rubber or contaminate the friction material, but I don't like the chance of washing away important lubricant on the backing plates, adjusters and other points. I'd rather see you disassemble the shoes & springs so you can relube on assembly or just leave it alone. You're the only one that is going to know it's dirty in there. Trust me!

Good point OldBlu....and that is why I asked what some would consider a newbie question.

I know I'm the only one that will know it's dirty in there, but I'm concerned about the dirt/dust/rust affecting function.

Use a stiff nylon parts brush or chop a paint brush in half to remove the dust. This can be used to clean up the surfaces and it keeps it our of your face (and lungs) if you were to hit it with a compressor...
