i have a 1995 explorer, took out the front drive shaft and the noise was gone. snow came so i put the shaft back in. 4 wheel drive works fine but in 2 wd major clucking going on. feels like a chain jumping a spocket. was told that it may be a differential or transfer case issue. question is how to see if it's either or. also checked u joints and they are good. thanks in advance for ant insight.
There's a vacuum actuated mechanism on the front diff that disengages it from the driveshaft when in 2H. I would check it to make sure it id engaging/disengaging properly.
