Do a tune-up, i bet your ignition has been neglected.

change the fuel filter as well, check the timing and perhaps rebuild the carb. get a Haynes manual also, this will help you in more ways then one.

what plugs are you running? are the plug wires new or originals? what is the timing set at and when you set it did you plug the vacum advance going to the carb?

It still sounds like your timing is off, or something in the ignition isn't right.
My friend's vehicle was like this, and even though I asked him a dozen times about tuneups and stuff ("yes, yes, done a tuneup") I finally found out the plugs had 125,000 miles on them... (The car had 450,000 miles and ran strong otherwise). Not saying you forgot plugs, but wondering if there is something completely worn out in the ignition you're missing.

Are the plugs gapped correctly?

As for the timing, definitely be sure the vacuum line to the distributor is unplugged (and capped off at the carb so there's no vac leak) when you set the base timing.

You may also want to make sure all three functions of the distributor are working correctly.

Unplug the vacuum advance for all three tests.

Base timing: Put a timing light on the engine and rotate the distributor in the block.

Mechanical timing: Set the base timing and be sure its snug. Rev the engine from idle to around 2500 - 3000 RPMs. Watch the timing mark with a timing light timing light. The timing should advance by around 30 - 40 and then drop back down when it returns to idle.

Vacuum advance: Use a vacuum pump, (or apply suction with your mouth if you don't have a vacuum pump [keep in mind it takes quite a bit]), on the hose that runs TO the vacuum advance canister on the distributor. At around 8hg, the timing should start to advance. By 15hg, it should have advance by around 10 - 20.

If any of the first tests fail, you need a new distributor. If the third (the vacuum advance) test fails, you can replace the vacuum advance canister.

Another test would be to remove the ignition control module and take it down to an autoparts store and have it tested (generally free).

get the carb rebuilt and see how it improves. you might consider looking into a 4brrl intake and carb.

as for the vacum lines its hard to say what they all go to, if they are not leaking and the device they plug into is working properly then leave them.

the gas loading up is probably both a timing issue and a carb needing some care. get a haynes manual and a timing light and set the timing yourself. good way to learn and know your vehicle. Just curious what type of plug are you running?
