I have a 1988 F150 with the 302 EFI, I am lifting with 6" suspension, and 3" body. I want to put a 351W in it that is carbureted. I am not sure if I need to gut the computer, it would be nice if I could, or do I need to reprogram it? I also have 38" tires.
I do not know much about the computer stuff, this is the newest truck I've had. If I could go with a 5.8 EFI I would do that as well, I just thought it would be better to put a carb on it, so I could wrench on it myself, and not take it to get computer work done.??
I have been trying to find gears to put in, will 3.11 work?
i would def go with 4.88 at the minimum.. i agree with lew....just put in the carbed engine and get rid of the computer....all you need is the wires for the distributer and altenator and such. its actually a simple swap to do.. i did it with an 89 mustang. went from fi to carbed. it was simple in my opinion
Excellent!!! Thank you! I have my 302, that has 256600 miles and still runs like a champ, the truck was a one owner. I was going to get intake manifold, headers, air intake, injectors, distributer, and for the price of a EFI Intake manifold, I can have a 351.
Somebody told me they found a crate motor for around $800, I can not find one that inexpensive, so I am checking with the local salvage yards.
The computer stuff is really not that hard to learn how to work on, but if you don want to do it then it is really not that hard either so. I have a 300-6 and 38s in my green truck in my sig and it has 456 gears and handels them fine, but you could go even lower if you wanted to..
If you dont do highway driving then i wouldnt hesitate to go even lower on the gears. the sky is the limit
