Glow Plugs?

In the last month, cold weather has set in and having some problems getting my 03 PU started the first time in the morning. I do not plug it in so I rely on the glow plugs for heat, Truck sits over night in a unheated attached garage. Whether it's 30 above or 0, my glow plug light only stays on for 10 seconds. Shouldn't it stay on longer, the colder it is? I feel that if it would stay on for say 20seconds, it would start the first time.

Any reason you can think of that why it won't stay lite for more than 10 seconds? Any way to change the time? Don't think I have a few individual glow plugs that might be weak because when it does start, it hits on all eight cylinders.

Truck has 130K miles on it and has NEVER failed to start until a month ago.

Thanks

The WTS light is not an indicator of the glow plugs actually being on. The WTS light is controlled by the PCM and is only a generic indicator. The glow plugs will stay on for up to two minutes when cold. So if you wait for a minute then crank, the glow plugs are still energized even though the WTS light is now off. You can tell when the glow plugs turn off as the headlights will get brighter since the extra draw on the batteries and alternator has been reduced.

Same thing goes for when the truck is warmed up. The WTS light will illuminate, but the glow plugs will not be energized because the PCM knows the engine doesn't need the glow plugs to start when it is up to operating temperature.

Like Ken said, the GPR will stay energized much longer than the light stays on. You can probably see the rise in you volt meter on the dash when the GP's actually drop out. As for your hard starts, you need to make sure you GPs are working.

Read this thread, it will get going on the diagnostics, quick and easy.

I just got done working on mine and the light will only stay on for a short time as mentioned above, the relay, if working properly, will continue to put power to the glow plugs.

You can also read my latest adventure that will explain what I found...
