99 V10. On cold restart or even warmish restart my engine now displays a noise that I haven't heard before. First, I had all the exhaust studs replaced about 10K miles ago. I know what leaking exhaust manifolds sound like and this isn't it. I also had the plugs and boots changed at the same time. When it first happened, my thought was very noisy lifters. My second thought was, I blew a plug but it stops after about a minute. I checked the oil level and it was fine. The noise lasts for about a minute or so then goes away. It is a roaring, almost whistling noise that increases with accelleration, then goes away. I have no CEL. Is it possible that it would set a code without triggering the CEL? I am thinking EGR or exhaust. As it is only noticible under accelleration it is hard to isolate it while sitting with the hood up and the time to find it is limited by how long it lasts. Any guesses where to start? Power is good and mileage hasn't suffered. There doesn't appear to be any miss. The truck has just under 100K miles and lives a pampered life so it is well rested for my RV trailer towing duties.
That roaring is most likely the clutch fan. Mine has done it since brand-new, on very cold starts, about half the time.
If yours is suddenly making noise when it never did, I'd check to see that it rotates freely by hand. With the engine OFF, try rotating the fan by hand, both when the engine is cold, and when it's hot and see if there's any difference.

This makes sense. It did make some noise before but now it is louder than before. I'm recovering from Open Heart surgery but today is a good day. If it warms up a little more I'll go out and give the fan a tug.
I didn't think it was related to mani studs. The noise I got when they were breaking was different and only happened when the engine was stone cold. I also had all of them replaced with new stainless ones. Thanks!
Art, you called it. The clutch fan was the culprit. I may try to replace it myself as it doesn't look to be too tough of a job. Since my surgery, it is hard to do work that requires bending over. I may have to take it to a shop. That may hurt more than the bending over...LOL. On the up side, I'm very lucky to be here to pay the bill. Thanks for the help. I really appreciate all you fine folks do here on this board. I will become a supporter to show my appreciation.

Excellent news! Thanks for reporting back. Also, thanks for becoming a supporter, and I'm sure you'll be happy without all the ads
As for the bending over, yeah, I totally get that ... I'm talking about paying to have someone do it, not the physical part
