Edge Insight CTS

I am planning on buying and installing an Edge Insight CTS. I have seen a bit of discussion in regard to Edge products and just wanted to bounce this off of some of you that may have already gone down this road.

I do not plan on doing any tuning to my truck. I am happy with it stock.

BUT I do want the ability to monitor different engine parameters so that I can head off problems should they occur.

Is the Edge Insight, in your opinion a good unit for this purpose?

What are your likes, or dislikes with this unit.

Is there another unit that you prefer?

Thanks for your time,

Eric

I've got the insight and have been very pleased with it. I personally like the look of analog gauges better, but with the insight, you can monitor up to 5 things at once, and switch between them. The cost of 5 quality analog gauges was much higher than the insight, so that made it an easy choice for me (not to mention the difficulty in installing all of the independent gauges). I bought the EAS EGT probe so that I can add on the fuel pressure sender when Edge comes out with it (hopefully soon). I've also installed a back up camera and used the Insight as the screen.

I don't have any dislikes, but I've read on this forum that analog gauges can be more accurate than the OBDII sensors (the Edge reads off the same sensors that the engine computer uses). I can see the need for higher accuracy on a highly modified truck that you are pushing the limits on, but for a stock or lightly modified truck that isn't being constantly pushed to the limits, I think the Edge is a great fit.

Overall, I've been very happy with the Insight CTS. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

I have almost the same question except that I initially wanted to get the Insight but went a head and got the Evolution CS instead. Haven't received it yet but ordered it. My Excursion is stock but I am looking at running the Evolution on Economy mode and see how it runs. I am thinking as long as it is on economy mode I should be save?? 2004 Excursion with 89,000 miles.

INSIGHT as a guage never as a tuner

Dislikes = the stupid EGT probe.. they made it proprietary and stupid expensive
so I bought a better EGT monitor from Auber for less ,, the back up cam is universal however

Pros = everything else including customer service !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I owned the orginal insight, and just upgraded to the new CTS. The background graphics are a big hit.(I use the flames,lol..) The accuracy is excellent.Readabilityexcellent.Larger screen lots of future abilitys. Photoelectric eye auto dims unit at night.Instructions are easy to follow.
But I liked the old insights ability to monitor 20 plus functions and be able to switch to different preset screen configurations. More options of features to monitor. Plus setting up on the computer and downloading to gauge unit was easier and less time. I was hoping these features would have been added to the new gauge.
It does consume some power when off too keep the memory alive, but is very minimal.
The egt probe is simple to install and has plenty of cable length to reach gauge anywhere in the cab. I plan to buy the backup camera in the future.
More mounting options would be nice. I didn't like the window suction so I built my own dash bracket..Other than that a fantastic unit.
Edge tech's are great help if needed, but only available on banker hrs.

it powers down with key off so no " current draw" it has an internal memory to save settings

I know the old Evolution draws minimal current when the key is off. But I believe it is on the order of 10 to 20 milliamps, which is less than other computer modules draw. I would be pretty certain that the newer CS and CTS also do this.

That makes sense because when you unplug the CTS from the OBDII port, you have to do a short reconfigure when you plug it back in (meaning it completely lost power when unplugged and did a soft reset). I don't know if it loses any memory or not (haven't started using any of the recording features), but I know you have to confirm that you're driving a Ford, etc when you plug it back in and turn the key on.

Yeah, with the old Evolution, if you unplug it and plug it back in, you have to go through the three warning screens again and a few other things.

It gets power from the OBD-II port, which is fused on at all times. At the very least, it will have to watch the CAN bus to see when the PCM is alive to know when to turn itself on and off.

The internal memory may run on some type of internal battery..I had mine unhooked for a week or so and had to completly reprogram it when I plugged it back into the truck..Or maybe it was a fluke. I now have it plugged in all the time. But I know it is removable to deter theft. Guess I will email. edge and ask the techs.
