the ford filter has a mounting bracket welded to the filter. if the picture of the filter you bought is accurate then the one you bought does not have that bracket which makes it the wrong one. Not sure why puralator went cheap and didn't make the part OEM.
Possibility of a miss boxed part too. I have had it happen on occasion over the years. Go back to the store you bought hte filter from and have them pull another filter for your truck from the shelf and compare it to the one you already have and see if they are identical.
If I remember correctly the filter snaps out of the bracket allowing the original bracket to be used for the replacement filter (unless too rusted out). Probably why the replacement didn't come with it. Only other reason the Purolator wouldn't work is if it didn't have the same number of fittings as original. Also depending on the mechanic some prefer to use their own parts due to the markup they can claim for added profit in cost of the job.
If the vehicle was mfg after 5/14/01, the Purolator site has an F65376 fuel filter specified & it has a mounting bracket attached.
Edit: Click on a part# & it'll put up a part pictorial. Application Guide Results
BTW, welcome to FTE.
