I believe I have all the symptoms of a clogged cat. converter. My truck has rough low idle, sometimes even stalling, and very poor power when accelerating. Plus, I believe that I see smoke coming off of the engine where the exhaust manifolds connect to the engine. I think the system is so backed up, some exhaust is actually attempting to escape at the manifolds.
I unhooked the cat. converter from the pipe that leads down from the exhaust manifolds to see if it would smooth things out. WOW! Talk about rattling some windows - sounds like a Harley when I started it up. The ideling seems smoother and I didn't notice the engine wanting to stall on low idle, however, the acceleration got worse - MUCH worse. I could hardly accelerate at all, which is not what I expected. I thought the acceleration might be sacrificed somewhat from a loss of backpressure, but not that much.
Am I missing something about why the truck would not acclerate hardly at all with the cat. converter unhooked?
