every so often i start my v10 and a puff of bluish white smoke came out. today it did it every time i started it. is this from the motor being too rich or what? thanks
Did you just move the truck a short distance and shut it off and then later restart it? You have the stock exhaust system on the truck?
It is not uncommon for the 2V 6.8l trucks to put out a blueish white puff of smoke when started up moved and shut off right way. On the next startup the puff would appear. Both my truck and both my dads trucks (all 6.8ls) did that every once and a while under the described circumstance. When the stock exhaust was replaced (muffler and cat) the puff went away. I think the exhaust was causing a buildup of fuel somewhere.
Or you could have leaky valve seals. The smell between fuel and oil is quite different.
I think thats your culprit. A little fuel can build up and cause the puff on the next startup. It isn't anything to worry about in my experience. Usually if you let the truck run for a couple minutes before shutting it off you won't get the puff.
I never noticed the oil level making a difference. I actually put in more oil at each change now than when the truck was new. After I ditched the stock cat and exhaust the puff never came back. Same with my dads trucks.
