My work F450 lost all boost yesterday while responding to a call. You could hear a huge air leak and I figured it was one of the boots. Luckily I was able to get it to the dealer about 10 miles away. The lower boot coming off of the CAC had a huge hole in it. The dealer did not have one in stock, however the tech suggested they look up the largest 6.0L boot they had. Turns out they are different part numbers but very similar in size. The one for the 6.0 was only 1/2" shorter with the same diameter. Fit like a glove and we were back in service within 15 minutes. So if any of you guys have a similar problem, the large 6L boots will fit if the dealer doesn't have one for a 6.4.
ok, was a good idea but not strong enough. Just kinda wondered if you could make a field repair, guess too risky.
I've been thinking a lot about that too since that happened Friday. What would I do if miles from nowhere and the same thing happened? Only thing I've come up with is carry another boot. It's bad to think that a 10-15 minute repair could leave you in a dangerous/desolate place without help.
Good ideas guys..
I wonder if that boot flexes any there where it is located? Due to the torque of the engine and the CAC being stationary, it looks like it would have to flex. Probably what tore the hole in it to begin with!
