how do you tell if the 427 block is what they call a side oiler?
I have a 427 short block, never bored. don't know what it's out of but it's never been rebuilt taken out torn apart and set in storage. I was thinkin of sellin it but I don't know how to tell if it's a side oiler. have complete original short block. also a new 428 in the box crank. heavy connecting rods? anyways any help would be helpful? how much is something like this worth also?
thanks chevy
If it has never been bored it is worth quite a bit. What are the casting numbers. I don't know how to distinguish just by looking at it but some others do know. The casting numbers are on the passenger side of the block sorta by the freeze plugs.
If you look on the backside of the block bellhousing area to the left of the rear main will be two tapped holes This would be a side oiler. Some other ways on the back look at the cam area center oilers had three holes that line up vert that are also drilled and tapped/plugged,Side oilers have 4 holes (3 above cam and one below)One last way to be sure of your side oiler is by looking at the Cross bolts on the side of the block near these about 1" above will be small plugged oil taps, just under the screw in frost plugs.Hope that helps ya out
Side oiler means the main oil gallery is on the side, not down the center. Look on the driver's side of the block, you will see three small screw-in plugs just above the cross bolts.
Hey did you know the Y-block was a side-oiler too?
