Try buying component speakers in stead if coaxial speakers. Component speakers are a woofer and tweeter separate. So you can place the woofer in the door and get the mids/lows while the tweeter you could integrate into the dash or someplace similar so that it is facing right at you at head level.
The more you insulate the cab of the truck the less 'tin can' it will sound. I believe components will serve you well. Then, if you wish for better results try insulating door panels... etc.
Then finally, if you want to get super fancy a pre-amp equalizer might be in order. This allows you to adjust frequencies all across the spectrum-- not just your high/mids/ and lows but frequencies all in between. Lets say the inside of your trucks absorbs the lows and reflects the highs your going to hear that tin can type sound. The equalizer can boost some frequencies and minimize others so the the frequencies emitted are EQUALized for your cab.
I've seen pics in automatic trans trucks where you build a small box for 6x9s, mount one up high on the floor board on the drivers side where the clutch pedal would be when pushed in, and up high on the passenger side of the floor board to the left of the air
My truck is going to get a twin channel 6x9 in the dash, where a factory speaker would be. And 6x9's in the lower doors to fill the holes that somebody else hacked in there. At least they wont get in the way of the window mechanism.
Well I built custom door speaker boxes and it sounds awesome. Here's some pics
hope that helps!
im intrested in how you did this, can u post somemore pics, and details of the building process, i just hooked up a stereo and only have 2 speakers and it sound like im in a tin can. lol ur set up looks cool and i bet it sounds good.
The door panels are from my 72. All I did for the speaker box was go to home depot an get a sheet of mdx particle board 3/4 "thick. I shaped it for the bottom half of the door panel (had to cover up some old speaker holes) the 6X9 was brought out enough for no window roll down interference the only reason the 6 1/2 is so far out cause there is solid metal there an didn't want to hack anymore . The rest of the design was trying to make it look good . the 6 1/2's are woofers from infinity and the 6x9s are pioneer. Got them from the yard i work at . Once I liked the fit I used self tapping screws to attach it to the door panel . then it was using a wood filler to make the box look like it was one peace . some rattle can semi gloss and shes done . sorry that's all the pics of the boxes I have got to involved in building the boxes an forgot to take more pics . these are my first set that I have ever built . I do have a pic of the homemade stereo mount that I made here it is. Oh yea the particle board takes a lot of the tinny sound away
