is there something that i'm missing here? I received and rebuilt a 360 that i got to replace my old 390 (cracked block) and last weekend I was ready to marry the tranny to it and drop it in. But as I was bolting the bolts started getting harder to turn and all of a sudden BANG!!! my transmission housing cracked!
what the hell did I do wrong? the ring gear was on the right way, the Torque converter fit snug up to it and it also fit over both posts in the tranny. HELP!!
I put the converter on the crank pilot ant it seemed to seat well. and when i put it on the tranny i had to spin the drive shaft to get it to seat on the smaller diameter shaft and it went in further, can it go further?
and 4x4jedi, if i don't get this to work MY marriage will crack, my wife's at her wits end! with all the $$$ spent in rebuilding the engine!
I had the same problem with my '68, I cracked 3 transmission bell-housing and of course the C-6 is a uni-body tran, so by the fourth marriage I ended up removing the engine and having an outdoors wedding then put the whole engine and tranny in together which meant I had to tear apart the whole front end, It wasn't pretty but once I got it all back together it worked just fine. good luck.
Yep, there are two things to look to. There should not be a pilot bushing in your crankshaft (per John) and with the tranny, there is what I call a "two-stage clunk" when you put the converter in. You should seat the converter and then you have to give it a twist for it to drop back a second time. I always put them in gear and seat the converter.
...And never try to pull the engine and tranny together with the bolts. Make sure they're all the way seated against each other by hand on the alignment dowels before you tighten any bolts. If they simply won't go together all the way, than you know you have some sort of issue that needs to be addressed and fun little glitches like this can be avoided. I know, it sucks. I hate to have to pull the engine back out when I've got it so close and it's so damn tempting to stick a couple bolts in and pull them together...
Did you use the ring gear from your 390? I broke the pump in my FMX when installing a new ring gear behind my 351W. I had ordered what was supposed to be the correct ring gear. It wasn't! I'm thinking maybe not all ring gears for FE engines are the same either.
Yes FEcruzer69 I did! I figured that the 390 and the 360 are practically the same engine. does anyone else have input on this? I'm about to get my tranny back from the welder and I don't want to F it up again.
Also, a mechanic also tole me he thinks there should be 3 "stages" when putting in the converter, the 1st and 2nd gears and also another one when the converter goes beyond the rubber seal inside. anyone know of this??
I cant belive that someone made a thread about this. THANK YOU! This exact thing happened to me back in December, I had the guts swapped into a new housing but have not had the chance to try to made them back. Rule is never ever mate by threading the bolts! I went from the stock 360 crank to a 390 crank and need to look into this bushing idea. If not then the problem had to be in the 2-3 step torque converter seat???
