Hi I'm Brian From NH and i'm new to the forum.I'm working on a 2004 F350 SD 4x4.It has a strange tranny problem. If u drive it in 2wd it's fine but if u drive it in 4wd such as plowing yesterdays storm the light flashes on the shifter and the check engine light comes on.When the 2 lights do that it also has intermittent power. It only does this in 4wd.When the light on the shifter comes on it throws a check engine light and the code is P0270 "output speed sensor circut malfunction".I have read a little about this on other sites and it seems it can be quite the elusive problem. The truck has 62k on it so it's low miles.I wanted to try to track the problem before i start buying parts.Any help is greatly appreciated.
Any ford techs on here?
P0720 means the electrical circuit to the Output Speed Sensor (OSS) is either open or shorted. It could be a bad sensor or a damaged wire between the sensor and the PCM. You need to check both electrically. The sensor is cheap enough you might just want to replace it.
Thanks Mark,
I rolled under there the other day and looked at it and it seemed ok but we have alot of salt up here so i should pull the plug off and check it out.Is this the sensor that is shoehorned in between the tranny tunnel and the top of the tranny It looks like it's not gonna be the most fun thing to do.I looked around and i didn't see any online, is this a ford only part? Is there a way to diagnose it using a multimeter? Just asking u all these questions because of your signature. Thanks
Yes, you should check the connector. The OSS is the sensor on top of the trans near the rear of the trans. You also need to check the wiring from the sensor to the PCM. You are looking for open circuits, shorts to each other, and shorts to ground. Any of those can set a P0720.
